Since when did Fishing, Poker, and Darts become a Sport??
Especially Fishing.

Not that i shot any of them but Fishing and Darts are definately sports.. I'm not sure about Poker that could possibly stretch it a bit far.
But this raises all sorts of possible debates, and even different countries governments have different views on what is officially a sport or not.
I think the only real answer is if it's competative then you can probably loosely term it a sport. |

| My personal view is that if it involves physical activity and is competitive then it's a sport. Fly fishing and Bass fishing are certainly covered by the media in this manner. I have no problem with darts, either. Chess and poker, to me, are games and not sports--but everyone will draw the line where they will. |

I have to comment about the "Sport" comments I am receiving. They are generally "Show more of the subject and less crowd". I purposely included a portion of crowd to show the whole sport experience. The action is depicted nicely, as required by the challenge, and the shot is very well composed. (Currently pulling 4.?)
Please consider what the photographer is trying to communicate when judging a photo. My message was about the whole sporting experience which includes the anticipation and emotion of the crowd. Zooming in on the action alone does not always tell the whole story. My message would be deminished by doing that.

For those of you who may not have English as a first language (and Gods knows most of you speak it better than me) and are wondering the validity of such things as fishing, poker, or darts as a sport here is one definition of the word sport:
A sport consists of a normal physical activity or skill carried out under a publicly agreed set of rules, and with a recreational purpose: for competition, for self-enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of skill, or some combination of these. A sport has physical activity, side by side competition, and a scoring system. The difference of purpose is what characterises sport, combined with the notion of individual (or team) skill or prowess

Thats the problem with the english language.....we have too many damn definitions for ONE stinkin thing....now wonder we are a society full of people who cant make up our own minds.......geez our linguistics alone are indecisive.

Hey ollie, what rock have you been hiding under? Try a google search on bass tournament and see how much money is at stake for competitive fishing. And darts is ...... well, have you ever played darts? It requires physical skill.
To me, for a competition to be a sport it must involve physical activity, thus spelling bees, poker and chess don't qualify. But that's just me.
BTW, welcome to dpc Jason. Go ahead, enter some challenges and show us what you can do.

Check out the before/after physical condition who compete in these at the highest level, and you'll find the same physiologic changes characteristic of any other sport. |
