Dear All,
I was thinking of a way so that here in DPCHALLENGE we can have a uniform mechanism for scoring the pics in each challenge. this way i guess we can both standardize scores and also encourage voters to try to get more critique knowledge. Now the dominent factor for a good score is if it is more visual appealing (of course this is my opinion). Here is my suggestion:
Instead of one total score assigned to each photo it would be better to break it into different items such as 1- technical aspect 2-creativity 3-composition 4- relevance 5- impression that it conveys , ... and the total score will be the result of all these scores which rates from 1 to 10 each (these items should appear separately for each photograph during the voting time and users will select the scores by selecting check boxes for each item's score). this way each user can see in details what aspect of his work needs more practice and i guess it will help us a lot more than a single score which again i think is mostly based on how much visual appealing that photograph is.
Any idea for or against this is openly accepted and appreciated.
thanks for your time.

So.. we have people here screaming that 500 entries is too many (myself included, although technically, I'm not screaming).. and your idea is to make it so we have to spend *MORE* time on each photo? Wow.. talk about your can of worms ;)

Hehehe.. seriously though, it's a suggestion that's come up again and again, and I like it.. but not with the current set up. I think it's a good way to get people to really focus more on the photo they're looking at instead of the quick glance and "instant pooling" that happens now. (for the most part).

Still, it's a change.. and we can't have that. ;)

I'm in favor of more uniform voting, but against complicating it.

Why not simplify it instead (1-5)
1-Poor, 2-Below Average, 3-Average, 4-Good, 5-Perfect

In the current system, extreme voters (Like it-10, dont like-1) would influence the result more than non-extreme.

Love your idea, but too time consuming. The biggest thing I'd like to see happen, even if it's only done on challenges once in awhile, is to hide everyone's score until the challenge is over.

I'm not really a big believe in trolls, but I do think that once a challenge has been underway for a day or so, and people see that their photo isn't doing as well as they had hoped...grumpiness and ill will can set in sometimes and photos that they would have given a 6 or 7 to suddenly get the dreaded "5" or worse. Human nature.

Let's just give it a shot for a few challenges and see if the average scores shoot up. Worth a try just for something different.

This has been suggested at least once before, and if I recall the consensus from the previous thread:
(1) making things more complicated is not desirable unless there's a substantial payoff

(2) each user may weight each score dimension differently (e.g. the visual appeal dimension may count for 80% of the score)

(3) the comment box already allows voters to give far more useful feedback than a series of radio buttons would allow

I agree that having more detailed feedback on each challenge entry would be nice, but I think that encouraging people to spend more time giving constructive comments on challenge entries (a social change) would be far more useful than trying to achieve this through a technical change.
