After my little whinge on that thread last week (can't find it now ...), thought I'd publicly thank those who commented on a couple of my shots as a direct result of that. Useful and helpful stuff.

Glad you got some feedback!

If you'd consider "paying it forward" by joining the critique club, I'd love to have you on.... your comments seem pretty good from what I've seen.

@Ed - some people (not all) would be more glad to know if their comments are helpful too. I know not everyone uses the box, but if you get a helpful comment, perhaps checking it will get you some more. It gives us feedback as to whether we're being helpful.

Oh yeah - the helpful box. I'm not sure exactly how I'm judging that at the moment - you know, is 'nice photo' a helpful comment? In one sense it is, in another it isn't. But I'll check back through to see that I haven't missed any :-)

edit: right - hadn't noticed the box on those comments: you have your tick (how could I be so rude?)

lol I wasn't trying to call you rude - just mention something about how (some) commenters like to know if it IS helpful. I mean - I learned something when one of my CC's wasn't checked by a frequent checker...there are definite things to be learned! :)

I've lately been posting additional comments right on the photo page, and then sending a note to the CC reviewer to let them know I'd read it and (maybe) responded. The quality of both comments and reviews I've read has been very high lately.

I highly recommend that people browse the "recently commented-on" photos and read comments and reviews on other people's photos...it helps gain some perspective on those written about your own photos.

I recently joined the CC and have done a couple critiques this week. I got the NICEST note from anachronite (I hope he doesn't mind the mention here) about how helpful and constructive he found the critique on his triptych! That really made the effort to critique worthwhile..even made up for those who never mark critiques as helpful or let me know they read it even!

I wholeheartedly endorse GeneralE's method of posting additional comments on the picture page itself to give the reviewer more to work with. Its frustrating and difficult to effectively CC a picture with N/A as the photographer's comments.

Actually, I post in the comment field AFTER the CC review is done. But I ALWAYS put something in the additional details area when I first submit, except maybe once when it was Sunday at 11:58. I'm one of the minority who think that field should be available during the voting...

Is there such a list??

Yes. Select "Browse" from the "Photos" menu. The default view is "recently commented on."

You'll probably be happy to know that the method for requesting a critique will soon be changing. In the near future, you will make your critique request after results are posted, rather than at submission time. When a photographer requests a critique, they will be required to provide information that will aid in making the critique.

Soo..what if we get them all done? Do the previous weeks go back in the pot then?

maybe a browse for Most recent CC comments? Might be more useful than the 1000 worst pictures.

If it looks like we're able to keep the queue clear under the new system, I will ask Langdon if it's possible to revive the old photos for which critiques were requested but never completed (these would become a sort of "secondary queue"). If that's not possible or if we finish THOSE, there's always the possibility of allowing other photos (those submitted prior to critique club or portfolio entries) to be submitted for critique. This is not by any means a promise of upcoming features, but more kind of a "what if" list I have in the back of my mind.

Of course, for any of that to happen we have to show that we can clear the queue. Recent numbers have been very encouraging. Yesterday critique club members requested a photo to critique 38 times. If we can repeat that performance today, we will have completed the multi-image composition challenge and be into the transportation photos. I think that's very encouraging!

Another hostage photo freed. Can you believe I'm catching up from Candy? Two more still behind bars.
