Hello friends to the north,
I'm planning a trip to Canada from NY in about a month or so,
any suggestions what to go see or where to go?
-the closer to the top of NY the better

To anyone from the US that has gone to Canada,
Anything I should be aware of or should/should not bring?

thanks!

Come to T.O (Toronto)and surrounding area we have the best food, fishing, nightlife and scenery around. To bad you did not come this weekend you missed a great free party/picnic. If you need proof of the scenery look below.

Take both Summer and Winter clothing, either they are having a heatwave or a sudden cold change..you can never predict how it will be! Unless any local can tell you better. :-)

I would have loved to take a photo of the line up behind you after some dolt held you up for 20 minutes at Niagara Falls.... It must have been a sight to behold... not to mention all those wonderfully happy people, with their happy faces... just eagerly waiting to meet this wonderful public servant.

The Toronto area is indeed quite nice, as is the Ottawa area. I guess it would depend on which part of New York State you are travelling from.

Come visit Alberta; you can see mountains and prairies. You can see some pictures of the Edmonton area in my P-a-D portfolio.

Don't forget to share your pictures if you do visit Canada!

Come to Montreal!!! If you get past the border patrol jab119 met... :) It's the city of festivals right now. Lots of things to see and do. There are lots of festivals and outdoor happenings and other great photo opportunities going on this summer. We ahve a fabulous old city and a thriving night life. Bit of Europe here in North America

Cheers

Went over to the casinos from Detroit a while back. The canadian guards were fine, but the US guy coming back gave us quite the hassle. Our theory is either he was really, really bored at 7 am on a sunday morning, or that his wife wouldn't give him any the night before! I would strongly suggest that you and anyone with you make sure you have either passports, or id and birth certificates. Have fun :-)

wow, I did not know it is hard to get across - I have never been out of the country. I live on Long Island so its about as far south NY can get. Im planning on about a week - could be a bit longer. I'm probally going with a few non photo people so we need some destinations that they will be interested in as well.

1. Bring lots of money to impress the women in Drz01's post, they like it when you buy them drinks.
2. Do not bring guns.
3. Have fun!

Whatever you do, don't do this!!

If you have a passport, you shouldn't have to many problems. I've crossed many times by car and plane and never had the chance to experience a conversation like jab119's :) If you don't have a passport, I htink it's a birth certificate or something that's needed. It's probably listed on the customs and immigration website of both the US and Canada.

I still recommend Montreal. Lots to see and do and eat and drink up here for your non photographer friends.

Cheers

Edit: Forgot to mention the Eastern Townships. In the mountains. Very beautiful.

I learned years ago that the border guards want very simple explanations to their questions. I was getting on a plane in Toronto on my way to Chicago:

him: What's the purpose of your trip?
me: Business.
him: What will you be doing?
me: Setting up a Citrix network between our Oakville and Chicago offices for real-time data sharing.
him: What will you be doing?
me: Plugging in some computers.
him: Go ahead.

You might try this:

him: what's the purpose of your trip?
me: propping up the Canadian economy with overvalued US tourist dollars
him: go ahead
