After taxes I'll have maybe 3 million, if I'm lucky. I can invest that and live off the proceeds nicely...

i would of course pay off bills and education for the kids...but i would stay in my home now but buy a summer home on the ocean...somrthing not too far away so i could go on long weekends...i have a friend who lives in a very very very small rental home with her husband and 4 year old daughter...i would buy them a home ....i always wanted to have a craft studio so maybe i could finish my basement and make one down there....there are so many neat little things that you could do without worry...it would be nice

I'll always need to buy something for the photoenthusiast in me.

Get out of debt, get the in-laws & parents out of debt, build home, travel, and invest the rest.

hrmm...I would open up a photography studio and print gallery. I'd get really good at portraits and teach other photographers about it. I'd also house some prints from artists who were having a hard time getting noticed in my gallery as well. I'd probably blow about a million from the get go on a house, my parent's house, my girlfriend's parents house, our marriage and honeymoon, etc...

I'd then invest the rest say 2 million (after taxes) to yield a modest 5% and then make 100 grand a year off the interest. With no house payment, and vehicles paid off, a hundred grand a year should be plenty...ontop of any income from my photo business, of course.

I'd take off for far away places:
1st stop: Galapagos Islands with a swing-by at Machu Pichu
2nd: New Zealand for a breather in the mountains
3rd: Zip up to the Great Wall and take a cruise on the Yangtze
4th: Weekend in Hong Kong for some night life
5th: Off to Sri Lanka to step where all the gods have stepped and drink a bit of tea
6th: Madagascar to see some sloths and variant species
7th: Pop in on Kenya and take a wild animal safari
8th: Boat ride up the Nile with stops at some of the less visited ancient cities
Then: It's on to Crete where the people are warmer than the weather and the tomatoes are sweeter than wine.
After my rest on Crete: I'll by me a sailboat and cruise the Islands between Greece and Turkey...and never come back.

Travel, travel, travel. I wouldn't even have to worry about which relative would be available to watch the kids, I could take them all along with a nanny so we can sightsee without worrying about taking our eyes off the kids. Or if we went without them, I could bribe our family to watch the kids :)

College educations, lots of em.

I like my home but I'd trade it for a bigger one and have a maid come so I'd never have to clean house again. The house would include a big studio for me and a major shop with every machine my husband ever dreamed of. Even some he didn't.

I'd buy our parents whatever homes they wanted and pay off my sisters houses. Get my husband a nice skiboat. (emphasis on NICE, as we already have a boat)

I'd also donate to childrens charities and battered womens programs.

I think that covers it.

Bummer. Lottery winnings are tax free up front here in Canada. You only have to pay taxes on the interest you make.

As for myself, I'd finish paying off the mortgage, get a new house designed and built to my and my wife's specifications on a high piece of land near the Atlantic Ocean. A few vehicles to reflect the seasons out here: a tricked out mid-size 4x4 pickup truck to get me wherever I want to take pictures any time of the year, a nice sporty car only for the summer months (it would ne ver see snow, slush or salt) and whatever vehicle my wife would like. Would do a lot more travelling here and abroad. Set up trust and education funds for all my nieces and nephews (I have no kids), start a charitable trust fund and invest the rest so that I can live well right into my senility, and in the event I outlive my lovely wife, I'll marry some blonde big-boobed bimbo like Anna Nicole Smith and let her give me a heart attack in bed.

Ditto tcrock41's reply. While doing so, I would be dropping in unannounced on DPC regulars, shooting candids of them before introducing myself, and then sharing the bounty by giving them each the camera or lens of their dreams.

I would:
1. pay off college debts, thus so far, continue college in Sanfran at the art school there.
2. While in Sanfran, buy a nice flat and studio set up.
3. Travel/meet people...hook up with a few National Geograghic Adventure Tours.
4. Of course, take care the parents needs as well.
5. Envest the interests.

Actually it would be even smaller than $3M.
If you won $5,000,000.00 and took a lump sum you would only get half, $2,500,000.00. Then federal tax alone @ the $319,100 rate and above would be:
$2,500,000.00 x 35% = $875,000.00 - $25,357.00[MFJ] = $849,643.00 in Fed Taxes. Leaving you with about $1,653,357

pay off the hotel and re-finance a bigger one worth 10million. Start the mortgage payments and stress all over again. Reap the benefits 20 years from now and move to a private island maybe even Maurituas.

I'd keep saving for that "L" lens.....
07/01/2005 10:42:02 PM · #24
Use the $ from #2 to hire a caddy for #1 and travel everywhere :-) There is no down side to L's when somebody else carries them. Oh and stop this "work for a living" slop.
