Any ideas on places to stop along the way. I won't be able to stop and hike along the way, so any places you recommend would have to be driveable. I'm going to the grand canyon (of course) is there a place to stop to get the best pictures, most likely goin to the southern rim as the north is to far a drive.

if you can go to the north rim of the canyon that is 100 times better than the south rim.

Go to the North Rim. My experience.

I haven't been through there in about 8 years, but I don't imagine it's changed much. If you like desert, the land between Barstow and Laughlin can make for some beautiful photo ops. Very desolate with not much there, but there's some nice wide open spaces and a few cinder cones scattered about if that interests you. Stop in Laughlin for lunch or some quick slots. The road up to Laughlin from the 40 is a fun road to drive, almost like a rollercoaster. I know there's a few ghost towns not too far out of the way, but I've never been so I can't say what they're really like. There's some beautiful countryside once you go up the hill from Kingman. Lot's of open land with pine trees bordering the area. Just don't drive too fast through AZ, state troopers are out there waiting for you. I got clocked at 117mph (after I slowed down) but we got talking and he only gave me a 85+ mph ticket which was 75 bucks. Williams is kind of a neat little town and they have a "deer farm", more like a big petting zoo, so if you don't see any wildlife to shoot you can cheat and go there.

If you hit the south rim, just check out all the various view points. Different views from each one and none are better or worse then the others. Be sure to hit the bright angel trailhead as that's where a few california condors roost and they put on a good show.

If you exit the south rim on the east end and take 89 back to flagstaff, there is a scenic loop drive by sunset crater and wupatki ruins. On that little loop there are about 50 places you could stop and take photos all day. The area is highly volcanic with all sorts of amazing colors, not to mention some pretty cool indian ruins (some marked, some not).

If you drive up to the south rim, or exit the south rim from the east and take 180, there is a short hike (about a mile) to a place call red mountain (about 30 miles north of flagstaff). the hike is flat and easy and takes you into the middle of a mountain where a volcano blasted about a third of the mountain away about a million years ago. From the hike you'll get great views of the sanfransico peaks which might even still be snow capped.

Are you heading to Phoenix?

If you head south from Flagstaff toward Phoenix, a little detour through Oak Creek Canyon is well worth the extra time that it will add to your trip. It will also take you through Sedona and the Red Rock Country. If you continue south and hook back up with I17 south, you will be just a few miles from Montezumas Castle. It is only about 3-4 miles off the main highway. There is a casino at the exit. You could well spend many weeks in northern Arizona and still not see all of the interesting things. If you head east from Flagstaff there is the meteor crater and the Petrified Forest, and lets not forget the Painted Desert.

Philosophy Of Life: Lifes Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body; but skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holy Crap! What a ride!"

I was going to mention that if they were heading to Phoenix. If you have a 4x4 or high clearance take Schnebly Hill road from Flagtaff to Sedona. One of the most scenic drives that most people never heard of (only if the re-opened Schnebly hill road though).

The drive from Sedona through Jerome, to Prescott is fantastic too and well worth the trip.

Sedona has my vote too. It's beautiful. Jerome is a nice little town to visit as well.
