There has been a lot of discussion of late about non-literal interpretations of challenge topics, and which challenge topics would be better suited to creative interpretation.

In my OPINION, the garbage challenge is perfect for creative interpretation.

However, alot of discussion and dialog I have heard seems to indicate that a lot of people are looking at this challenge very prosaicly. They seem to think they can only take a picture of the actual garbage that is in a garbage can or dumpster or whatever.

I'd like to propose, at least to the people who read the forums, that this challenge is a GREAT opportunity to play with metaphors.

Here are just a few interpretations that I hope I see or that people are, at least, tolerant of ;) ...

euro-trash

the homeless (throwaways of society)

trashy clothes

junk art

"white trash"

getting trashed (drunk)

trashing something (vandalism)

garbage men

recycling

"one man's trash is another man' treasure.'

discarded or useless data

empty talk, nonsense

trash talk - disparaging, taunting, or boastful comments especially between opponents trying to intimidate each other

Hey, I'm not falling for any of that creative, metaphorical stuff this time...

Back before Chex Mix was bagged and marketed as such, my family used to call it "Trash". I hope people get it :) Just kidding... I am no fool, I am going with GeneralE on this one :)

In college we used to have parties with a common source called a garbage can which consisted of whatever alcohol folks brought to the party and enough Koolaid to make it drinkable. Needless to say, any 'shot' I woulda took back then would definitely be 'fuzzy'!

It's actually the more creative photos here that get my higher votes. The ones that make me think, make me say "wow!" or make me laugh are the ones that I like the best and vote higher for. Unfortunately for the submitters, technicality rates lower for me, no doubt because of my inexperience.

In any event, magnetic, I'm with you on this one 100%.

I agree about using your creativity; and if you don't care for the scores, I'd say go for it.

When I vote, it is based on how grabbing and visually interesting the image is, the technical aspects of it only come second.

I was off at one of my jobs for a while. My only potential submission right now would probably be pretty mainstream (I don't want an image of "mainline" garbage for a variety of reasons). But then I usually get those more offbeat ideas at the last minute, which is part of why they are usually technically mediocre or "almost" what I want.

Is a screenshot of the contents of my Trash folder considered a digital image?
10/04/2002 03:34:15 PM · #11
I agree wholeheartedly, as a matter of fact, you even mentioned the name of my submittal, more or less, keeping the "garbage" part, "One Mans Garbage is Another Mans Treasure".

I was trying to take a picture of my used up batteries before I went "duh" and started using rechargables. I must have a pile of about 20. The only thing is...the picture looked pretty boring. Oh Well... I will probably score someone high who pulled it off. LOL

LOL = a hearty laugh out loud
lol = a little laugh out loud
ROTF = roll on the floor
(in case you didn't know that, but felt it was appropriate to mention)

Magnetic, could you please explain the term "euro trash" for me. I have never heard that expression. Thank you.

Karen,
Maybe you want to write the "official" DPC glossary -- lisae and JohnSetzler are working on intro material for the site update, so check with them first.

Essay on the Eurotrash Phenomenon

OK, folks.

I'm surprised by the low number of people that rallied to the concept of this thread, considering the long discussions I had all week with some about 'creative interpretations to challenges being of paramount importance."

So there are a small few of us that believe in non-literal interpretations.

A sobering thought :P ... Is all lost? How can we get the word out???? Is it basically a lost cause on this site?

Thanks, Magnetic. I know a few of those Eurotrashers myself. For instance, this well-off couple who in Europe will always consult their Michelin guides whenever going to restaurants in other cities/countries to make sure they dine at two or three star restaurants. The US apparently wasn't worth the bother of investing in a restaurant guide and they reported on their trip to San Francisco as it being a "hamburger town" :)

I wanted to take a nice shot of my street with all the trash cans lined up for the picking, but I forgot about it on trash day.....DOH!

Well, I'm with you. I didn't speak up 'cause I didn't have anything to add. non-literal interpretations are welcome in my book so long as they are strong photographs.

This site scares off anyone creative (in a non-literal sense), don't you know?

*edited to add the paratheses.

How would you remedy that situation?
