I just wanted to announce that I finally got my camera. I chose a Canon PowerShot A40. I know that it isn't the best, but it's a WHOLE lot better than what I've been using.

I would appreciate any tips from other PowerShot A40 users, especially about how to use the manual functions. I'm one of those that reads the manuals later. LOL I'm in the process right now of experimenting and learning how to use it. Having fun and will be out shooting most of the day today, so I'll check back later. Thank-you in advance.

Congrats ... I think that's one of the best choice for real photographer in that range of price and a very good deal. I just read a review in a french photography magazine , comparing 8 2MP camera and it was their choice photography-wise .. some other are smaller , nicer but I think that for somebody doing more than family snapshot ... that's a good choice.
Congrats ... and welcome to the Canon club ;-)

Lovely camera that Connie. I would have one myself except that the A40 hadn't been launched when I was buying my camera and I didn't want to buy the A20 only to have it superceded a couple of weeks later.

Im sure it'll produce some *excellent* shots. I look forward to what you do with it!

Oh, you guys...thank-you so much for affirming my purchase today. I had a blast taking my first shots. It was a cold and dreary day today and I about froze my butt off, but it was worth it. OMG!! I can't believe the difference in the quality! I am SO happy!

Here are some of my shots from today. I was also working on the challenge, but rest assure, the pictures I posted on this gallery are nothing of what I ended up choosing to submit. I would greatly appreciate any comments, critiques...etc. I have a lot to learn about this camera and any help is greatly appreciated.

Now, if I can get the web page posted right is the current challenge

Great first batch of shots - I especially liked "Billings 2" and "Dont want to know".

I dont know if you're already doing this but in case you're not can I suggest that you set your camera to take pictures in the largest format you possibly can and use Super fine compression. I think the out of the box settings are slightly lower on both.
