I have the best oppurtunity in the world right now! I'm taking a 2 day writing workshop with Orson Scott Card at UVSC (Utah Valley State College), which I am learning loads and loads in (Monday was the first day). I feel a little silly, since I'm by far the youngest and most ameture but it's the most exciting thing I've done in a long while. And you know when something great happens to you, and you want to share with everyone even if no one cares? :o)

So, I'm wondering if there are any other OSC fans around here?

I am a big OSC fan -- although I am irritated that he doesn't write more. I have been expecting a sequel to Lovelock for years now (as promised). I don't so much like his Earth series, but everything else I love.

Lucky you!!

I'm not entirely familiar with the name. Surprisingly, I've never been to a writing workshop (that's one of those contextual/voice jokes)... what is taught at such a thing?

And if you want to talk about silly and amateur, you should've been in my shoes when I had my first screenplay reviewed at 15.

Wow!!! That is the coolest thing I've heard in a long time! What a wonderful opportunity!!!!!

I've read almost the ENTIRE Ender's Game series....just phenomenal writing, character development.....you will gain so much from this experience, I'm sure :-)

Someday when you publish something you'll have to autograph copies for all of us DPCers

I'm a mighty big fan of OSC. Not really of his short stories, but his novels. Of course there's Ender's game and the plethora of books it's spawned, but I also love the Alvin Maker series and others. I'm still waiting for the sequals to Lovelock (The Mayflower Trilogy). I also loved Pastwatch. I take it you already participate in his writing group on his Web site.

Yeah, it's been over a decade and still no volume 2 or 3.

I'm also a fan of Orson Scott Card. I haven't read all of his books, but I do have all of the Ender's Game series, which I think is excellent. I also have The Worthing Saga, which is also very good.

I once thought that I wanted to be a writer, until I took a creative writing class in college. Although I did very well in the class, I soon realized that writing is very hard work, and very scary too. I'm not saying this to scare you off. Hopefully, it will be easier for you than it was for me. Even if it isn't though, stick with it and some day we'll be collecting your books and people will be attending your writing workshops. Good luck!

Another OSC fan here.
I've read all that I've managed to get my hands on, but my fav is still probably the first I read (and I think his first novel) A planet called Treason and the Ender's trilogies.

Count me in. I keep hoping to someday see Ender's Game (or any part of the series) turned into a movie. :-)

Chalk one up here! Enders Game is suppose to come out as a movie sometime in 06 I think. Hope it comes close to the books.

OH WOW! He is great. I am not much of a sci-fi geek but Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow are among my favorite books.
How did you get hooked up with him?

Have you read the script? He used to have the script on his web site (about 10 years ago). They are aging all the kids. Which I think is smart since it would be almost impossible to find kids at that age that could portray the characters faithfully.

I got hooked on him via Ender's Game. Haven't read him in a while, though.

Alrighty, here's an update:
Sadly, I had to end my class time with Mr. Card a couple hours early today, due to the fact I was puking my stinkin' guts out after our lunch break. (It was probably some bad food or something.) But I think I'm satisfyed and got my $175.00 worth anyway. It will take me ten years to understand everything I took notes on- so I think it was a pretty good investment :) If at all- It was amusing to see the computer, sci fi, short short (only if male, mind you) big glasses type geeks that were also attending the class. I have nothing against these folks, of course, I like them- I'm just not one of them.
Overall Orson Scott Card is tall, deep voiced, and an amazing teacher. He was quite different than what I imagined- ALOT more down to earth. It was really interesting to hear how some of his stories started out and evolved. *I also learned that he just completed a short story about Mazer Rackham that starts before Ender's Game and goes into it. Pretty neat huh? I'm excited for that one.*

I urge you, if you haven't heard of ORSON SCOTT CARD, go to your local library and get ENDER'S GAME - heck, just buy it, it's that good. After that one, I suggest ENDER'S SHADOW and work your way through. I could never get into the scifi fantasy thing because it was all the same story- but this guy is different.
Also, if you like creepy stories- LOST BOYS is a not so popular one of his, but it's a good one. FYI it's not about vampires...
Even if you're more of a poetry man/woman, his collection of poems AN OPEN BOOK is really fatastic- but harder to find I think.

Wow, this is long, sorry. It was just great. If you have questions or anything, post it. Not that I'm an expert or anything. It's great to hear of some many OSC fans.

His website is //www.hatrack.com - or Google him.
