I'll add the obligatory "Lets Stop now!"
06/20/2005 12:28:24 AM · #5
This is my 1st challenge and my first time to take a picture other than snapshots around the house and my first time really using a digital camera. As far as photoshop and editing I'm pretty much clueless. I'm not expecting to do well, though it would be nice. This one is also a little tough to vote on, lots of great photography but it's hard to do the fantasy thing.

I have nothing to complain about...

Actually I am voting through the photos and i must say that i am slightly dissapointed with some of the images. Some people seem to have lost all creativity this week, a lot of seemingly photoshoped snapshots. Its the creative, deep, well done photos that keep me voting on, i would have given up a long time ago otherwise.

I thought I had a good Idea and image, the voters hate it presently sitting at 4.200.

I think a lot of the over-processed and especially the ones featuring toys are going to do pretty badly. The voters here are very fickle and these are either love-em or hate-em images, which effectively cuts down the positive voters to 50%.

I have to admit I'm not a fan of maxed saturation/contrast even in a 'fantacy' topic. I'd much rather sea a well lit image presented.

The longer I'm here, the more I realise that some people take/create images specifically for the challenge, most seem to take an image they happen to have shot that week and make it fit with a title... not saying one is good or bad...just an observation. I always shoot specifically for the challenge - seems to be a huge mistake - next challenge I'll take random shots and see if it comes higher with a title amking it fit.

Im sure a lot of people will assume mine is one titled to conform to the challenge, but it was taken specifically for the challenge- because of what composes the shot, how it looks, and a small detail that I believe the voters are overlooking

here are my stats now-

I don't think thats true of the high scorers. I would guess that most of the top 20 in each challenge have been shot specifically for the challenge.

The way I do it is I have a calendar with local 'events' which might provide photo opportunities. I generally know of 3 or 4 per week through the summer. When the challenge is announced I'll check to see whats on and if I can work up a theme or idea based on one of the events.

I admit that sometimes the theme link can be a little 'thin' and thats when I get punished by the voters.

The main thing I found is the lighting, no matter what event if the lighting is bad then the image won't score well.

This method appears to be working reasonably well, i've managed 6 top 20 places in the last 10 challenges. Give it a go it might work for you.

Think you might want to delete the "spoiler" - you are not supposed to reveal your shot while voting is taking place, especially not to attempt to gain a better vote.

I would have to agree with you on that. My scores not fairing much better, and it is tempting to "hint" as to what it is so that I can justify it. But thats not the name of the game...

Taken care of. Thanks to both of you for the advice.
