Effective earlier today, I have taken John Setzler's place for handling the administration of the critique club.

I am aware of the concerns that club members and site users alike share about the relatively small percentage of critique requests that are getting handled. In the near future, I hope to implement some changes that will make the critique club more rewarding for its members, while also ensuring that a greater percentage of the requets get handled.

First, I would like to invite anyone who is interested in providing quality feedback to your fellow photographers to join the critique club. If you are not currently a member of the club and would like to join (it's free), simply let me know and I'll add you to the list.

Second, I would like to ask that each member of the club who still wishes to participate critique at least 4 photographs between now and the end of May. At the end of May, I will be in touch with any photographers who have done less than 4 to determine whether you still wish to participate in critique club. I will also delete any members who do no critiques in that time. Since critique club members get priority in receiving critiques, I want to ensure that only those who are actively participating are in fact receiving that priority status.

Finally, if you have any suggestions regarding improvement of the critique club experience for its members and the users of the site as a whole, plese feel free to post them here or email them to me.

Thank you!
Terry Auspitz

I'd suggest two things

1/ provide guidelines on the types of information that should be provided for the details field. This should be a minimum of exposure information and a paragraph from the photographer describing what they were trying to achieve or convey with the shot and also any problems or mistakes that they are aware of with the shot.

2/ require that these guidelines are met, or the critique shouldn't be done - other than a comment pointing the photographer to the required info for a critique. It isn't a punishment thing - they can ask again the next week, but I don't think it is unreasonable to refuse to critique an entry where the exposure info is not present and the details field is 'NA'

The reason behind this is to improve the process for both sides - it isn't to make life harder for the photographer. You don't need to be technical genius or artistic master to articulate what you were trying to do. If you can't say what the picture is supposed to be of, it is difficult to expect someone to usefully comment or suggest improvements.

Hi Terry - I am really sorry but I have been a huge slacker with critiques. My son has been very ill, and I have been busy taking care of him. I will do my best to get my 4 in. If I fall short, I am still wanting to participate - life just needs to get back to normal! Thanks!

Can we take this opportunity to thank Mr Setzler for the work he's put in to date in establishing the group, and also KarenB, who I believe has been helping him with it.

THANKS John!

Terry: Hey boss! How's it hanging?!

HI Terry

Glad to have you on board! :-)

When I joined I did tell John that I could only do 1-2 CC a challenge so I think handdling 4 in a month isn't a big deal. ;-)

If I am still on it, you can take me off.

I would like to say thank you to John here and I hope he does not feel bad/sad to have his 'baby' kind of 'taken away' even if it was a lot of work for him and even if it's something he wanted.

Thank you John.
Really.
Merci infiniment John.

Setz - thanks for all of it, man. Are you staying in CC still?

:)

Terry - HE's running it?! Just kidding - I LIKE Gordon's suggestion about details and our job being "look, you need to put in details as per "this post" if you want a critique from CC." That's the best idea I've heard in awhile.

I echo the sentiments of Kavey... Well done John!!!

I have been doing critiques and will continue to do so, even though I hardly have time to submit an actual challenge entry lately.

I do have one suggestion for the critique club... Would it be possible to order the queue to spit out those who haven't received a critique for the longest period of time first. Obviously this isn't necessary if we clear the queue each week, but with the number of challenges growing, and the number of submissions growing I suspect we may never clear the queue again.

Also, since my life evolves around SQL I'd like to offer my services if they are ever needed - although this site certainly seems to know what it's doing. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Kavey.. but it was really John. Unfortunately just as I had taken on assisting John, my life was turned upside down by my husband's layoff from his job. I had informed John, and I am glad he found a worthy administrator for this task.

Terry, Thanks for the post, and good luck with this! I will let you know how my time constraints effect my CC participation, as I may be going back to work full time. :0)

Yeah, we're behind you Terry. Thanks for going the extra mile here.

Suggestion 1: Maybe the check box could read "Do you want your photo put in the que for an in depth critique." New members are always getting confused about what to expect.

Suggestion 2 : Once a month call for new critiquers might pick up new members who are interested.

I like Gordon's suggestion about giving us the minimal amount of information to do a critique. I know it is frustrating for me to want to suggest a longer/shorter shutter speed or a different aperture setting, but I dont know what it is originally, blah blah blah. If a photog could just say, "I was trying to do X, and Y happened" in the comments field it would help me out.

John, You've done a great job. Thanks

Club, Man, you got some big ole feet to follow in!!

edited to throw in -- I know not all cameras/software records EXIF data, so that may not be able to be obtained, thus if the photog could add something about his/her process in the comment field, it would help.

Grats on the new challenge Terry. Time is freeing up in my life, so I expect I can get back in soon.

If you need a hand with anything, just holler.

And a thousand thanks to John for kick-starting the idea to begin with. It´s a very enjoyable side of the site.

I think Gordon´s idea that anyone wanting an indepth critique should need to supply indepth info on what THEY think and were thinking, is a great idea. At the absolute minimum, ISO, Speed & Aperture should be required.

Excellent... high on my list of priorities is to get information about the CC added to the FAQ. That list of questions is almost exactly the list I have in front of me.

Thanks!
