My parents are recently retired and want a digital camera. I have been out of the point and shoot for a while and have lost track of good cameras.

What do you think.... the variables would have to be easy to use, great battery life, minimal shutter lag time, for under $400.

Thanks for all your help!

IXUS 700 at the top range or IXUS 50. Both excellent point and shoots.

For better photographic results you could try the Powershot S2 IS but this might not be within budget.

Its predecessor S1 IS was also great but has a bit of a problem with battery life and lower resolution. The Image Stabilizer function on both is excellent.

Plug plug plug!!

I'm going to be selling my daughter's Coolpix 4300 (4MP) soon. It will come with two batteries and a 128MP CP card and all the usual accessories. It has typical P&S lag but the price will be very "right."

I have been looking for exactly the same reason - although their budget is around the $200 mark.

The contender so far seems to be the Nikon Coolpix 4600. There is also a 5600 model that is 5MP instead of 4MP. Seems to be a reasonably short lag-time for the price and has some nice features. Runds on AA or variations, so no expensive specialised batteries.

I hope you had better luck than I did with my Mother-in-law, I gave her my old hp photosmart 612 and she just couldn't grasp how to use it, I had to show her how to turn it on every time she wanted to use it lol, she ended up giving it back to me and buying a regular 35mm, which isn't much different, I think she just had it in her head that a digital camera was some kind of new age high tech gadget that she just couldn't use, but oh well, now I have an extra I let my husband take with him hunting and such, I don't trust him with my good one lol.

whatever you guys end up doing I suggest not getting as hung up on megapixels as the other factors. Megapixels are cheap these days, that said, there are tons of really crappy p-n-s cams that are 4 or 5 mps but take pictures that look like they came off a 1950's TV.

Make sure it has Optical Zoom (digital zoom is worse than I can find words for). Consider there are 3mp pro cameras selling for thousands of dollars...so more MPs dont' necessarily equal better.

I got my parents a sony cybershot (can't remember the model) a few years back and they love it. They even email me photos once and awhile.
If you knew my parents you would know how amazing that is, think that 70's show... I fell out of my chair the first time I ever got an email from them.

Love my Konica KD400Z! Dead easy and get some terrific results. One thing - if it's not a rude question- how old are your parents? I'm just wondering when I will qualify for this sort of thread!!!! (My children stay out of this!)

:)

Check into getting them one of these. They're awesome cameras, and now can be had for around $250-$299. Excellent image quality, lots of features, easy as pie to use. Just a thought! :o)

That whole A series (up to A75/85/95 now) look good, as they have full manual capability in addition to P&S ease.

I second the DX6490. There is a bit of lag, but you can get great quality photos, so I overlook that.
