I recently purchased a Canon 20D and was anxious to do some night shooting. I live near the beach and I went down to the sand at around 10:30pm. There was a slight glow from nearby houses and street lights. It was enough light to work with. However, when I tried to take pictures in automatic mode, the lens would keep trying to focus, over and over, and it would never "lock onto" anything and it wouldn't let me push the shutter button. Finally, I switched the focusing to manual and it let me push the button...although it was virtually impossible to focus in the darkness...so all of my pictures came out blurry. Anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong...why it wouldn't let me focus in automatic mode and how I'm supposed to manually focus in the dark?? Thanks a lot.

what lens are you using both of my sigma lens will not focus in the dark at all on my rebel xt. I am not sure if its a canon problem or not, I know nikons usually focus right away or will let you atlease take the shot.

First you need a tripod and a remote realease or use the built-in timer. What are you trying to shoot in the dark? If it's a landscape then stop down your lens to around f/8 and manually set it to infinity focus. If you have a foreground subject like a boat you can light it with a lamp and focus on it then switch off the light. Either way shooting in really dark situations is harder than not.

You need a fast lens! Something around 2.8 would be suffice. You will defintly need a tripod because of slow shutter speeds. (Hint try to focus on the brightest object at the same distance and get it focus locked and shoot)

I have two sigma lenses. Maybe that's why it won't focus. Can anyone recommend a 2.8 Canon lens that doesn't cost a fortune???
