I've started running out of places to ask this question, so I'm tossing it out here (actually, I should have thought to post it here FIRST!)...

I'm in the "high-pitched whining to my wife" stage in the process of getting a Nikon D100. I already have a Nikon N6006 (35mm), so I have a couple lenses that will fit on this new digital camera. The lenses I have are a Quantaray 70-300mm AF, and a Quantaray 35-80 mm AF.

In reviews I've been reading, there are some lenses (mostly older ones, apparently) which will disable features like auto light metering through the lens. Only certain lenses will work with all of the features on the D100 and some of Nikon's other newer cameras.

I'd like to know with some certainty that my Quantaray lenses will allow metering, as I have no desire to carry a hand-held meter around with me... and since the camera is pretty pricey in the first place, I'd prefer not to make any new lens purchases right off the bat (although I would eventually like to get some better, Nikkor ones).

Anyone have any answers? I've run into some pretty unsaavy people at Ritz Camera who can't even tell me whether their 0%/6 month financing offer is still in effect...

Thanks in advance!

Well, I can't tell you much about your question...But I do know that Quantaray lenses suck...Stay away from them but I guess it's too late for you as you have bought them already :-/

Alan, I have had good luck with Quantaray lenses in the past. I'm not sure where the substance behind the 'they suck' comment came from, but these lenses 'should' work if they are fairly recent lenses (less than 4 or 5 years old). If these lenses will allow you to meter on your 6006, they should also allow metering on a D100. The D100 is the Nikon N80 body with a digital back. If your lenses work on the N80, they would also work on the D100.

John, the comment came from reviews and other users's similar comments.

The interesting thing about quantaray lenses is that they are not made by quantaray.. they are made by companies like sigma and nikon...

Right...and it's a lot of luck to get a good one :) maybe you got lucky...Most people don't get lucky and they get shoddy lenses.

Hmm... I thought Quantary supplied lenses to companies like Sigma, Nikon, Vivatar..

The only lenses you would have any problem with the light meter on a D100 would be the older AS-I lenses that nikon used to make, this was before auto-focus. If your lenses work with a 6006 you shouldn't have a problem. As far as Quantaray lenses, if you notice these lenses are only for sale at Ritz Camera or companies owned by them. These lenses are made for them, at a minimal cost and resold at about a 100-150% markup. I do own one Quantaray lens and it is a 70-300 f4-5.6. I haven't had a problem with it and to be honest I have used it on a D1x and had a few great shots with it. I would really like a few faster lenses though. The only thing that will not work with them is the 3-D Matrix Metering, which is true of any non Nikkor lens.
Last of all the 6 monts no intrest at Ritz should still be in effect, it is carried out throuh a seperate lending instatution, not like a visa or master card, the credit lines on them have been pretty generous so far, I have only processed three of them and 2 have been approved for between 4000 and 5000 dollars. Just be careful because when the 6 months are up you WILL GET HIT WITH ALL THE INTREST. So just make sure the balance is gone by the end of the 6 months.

PS: If you couldn't already tell I do work for a company owned by Ritz, we got bought out about a year ago, and things haven't been the same since.

Thanks bunches for the information about both the lenses and the financing. I'm going to call one of our local Ritz shops tomorrow to see if I can beg someone for definite information about the financing (the flyer actually says that the deals are only good through 9/15/02, so I don't know whether that means the financing deal or not).

As for the Quantaray lenses... I've been using them for several years with my 35mm Nikon without any problem. I probably have the same 70-300mm one that Corey mentioned, and I was able to get some REALLY cool shots of a space shuttle launch with it a couple years ago (I was in the press area, three miles from the launch site during an early morning launch). I really can't complain about the Quantaray's personally. I do anticipate buying a Nikon one sometime if I get the D100, though.
