So, finally got my Nikon 8800 up and running, in time to drag it to the Mets-Astros game last night at Shea.

Aside from some of the negative issues pointed out by owners on dpreview.com, the camera works brilliantly. Images are sharp and colors seem to be okay. Zoom is much quicker than expected, and while the machine has a tendancy to hunt in AF mode at greater than, say, 150mm, it's pretty accurate overall. Some shots looked questionable on the 1.8" LCD, but they were crystal clear once loaded to PC.

But sadly, all the cons I read about are very prevalent for such a high-end (consumer) machine. AF-assist lamp is really weak, write time to CF card is unbearably slow at times and the manual focus option will take some time to get acclimated. Lastly, the lens is incredibly noisy! I hope I don't find myself in situations that are too quiet or won't be disrupted by the audible grinding of Nikon mechanics.

Then I forgot to upload photos to my web server last night. Sorry, no examples until I'm off work later this afternoon. Sucky.

So you decided not to upgrade to a D-SLR. I did the same choice too, but I am still trying to understand if I did the right thing. I share the pros and cons you highlighted about the 8800. I am still happy with the all-in one, the VR and the movable LCD. However, I am more and more concerned about its speed/accuracy in focusing, especially under low lighting conditions. Maybe its behaviour in the darkness challenge will make me issue the final statement...!

Yeah, night shooting with the 8800 is questionable. I did go to a dark corner of the stadium to fire off a couple shots, but I think it's going to take some practice with this cam.

The 8800 is very capable, though. It took about an hour of tinkering before I got somewhat adjusted, so maybe getting to know the camera well will compensate for some of its shortcomings.

I really couldn't justify paying up for the SLR. Not to mention that I'm an incredibly impulsive shopper, and my office is just across the street from B&H Photo ... I'd end up with more gear than I could possibly have a use for. I'd say it's not a bad choice for an intermediate user, but it has all but sealed my decision to get a DSLR next.
