So, yes, yet again, another "Edit This" forum post, where all the Photoshop geniuses can show off (or anybody else that wants to play around with it). I want you to edit the original of this photo to the best of your ability (or creativly different from what somebody else has posted in) and post it back to this forum and tell the detailed steps you took to edit it (or at least the basics).

The Original:

Example:
Editing: rotated it a bit, healed out telephone pole in lower left, took out wire on the bottom, took out sun glare spot, color balance (reds and magenta), little burning of the clouds, usm.

Will come back and add PP info.

White Balance adjust.
Levels, options, 0.5 & 0.5
Shadow/Highlights - adjust to suit.
Tweaked the daylights out (yeah, pun intended) it in Hue & Saturation.
Contrast & Brightness, minor dodge of clouds, noise reduction in CS2

Eh - like the 2nd edition down below a lot better.

Here's my take. I stuck to a realistic interpretation, but with a bit of a more high-contrast look. I kept the lens flare, I kinda liked it. I worked with the detail in the clouds, to bring out some of the fine wisps. I removed the pole at bottom left and touched up a few distracting bright specks near the bottom. Most of the major changes were done with curves applied selectively. Several passes of USM were used, both for sharpening and also for local contrast enhancement. Finally, a NeatImage pass was run, faded to 50% in luminosity mode to leave a little grain.

Editing challenge, once a month, say???

SC picks a shot from the portfolios here, advanced edit rules apply. What do ya reckon?

Here's one from me, very traditional. Did the cloning bit to remove the pole and wires and flare. Got REAL CLOSE to the "tree peak" middle far right and cleaned up some brightness haloes around it. Ran levels. Went into selective color and used the white, black and neutral channels to remove the yellowish tint. Ran my own little home-brew action to sharpen. NeatImage applied and faded. Burned in upper left corner slightly. Resized and bordered and saved for web.

BTW, except for the cloning and the very slight burning, both of which are of minimal importance here, the entire process is basic-editing legal, and is actually a good example of how an image can be enhanced significantly with basic tools.

Robt.

burn it

0. convert to betargb
1. duplicate background
1a. mask duplicate using find edges, selected, expanded, and feathered
1b. put duplicate layer in multiply mode
1c. apply some extreme levels to the dup (with mask)
1d. put duplicate layer at about 40% opacity
2. create group with inverted mask and some painted sections removed
2a. put new level adjustment in group, increase contrast to dark foreground mostly, paint sky mask a little
2b. put channel mixer adjustment layer in new group (r,g,b) = (25,75,0) i think
3. convert to srgb

Cloned away lens flare, utility pole & lines
Contrast/Brightness to suit.
Brought up saturation levels.
Conversion to Black & White, then faded back about 50%
Minor dodge & burn in sky & clouds.
Added uniform noise.
Increased canvas size, resized back to 640 and added dimensionals in border.

Mask out foreground, copy to new layer, paste godzilla in new layer in between, new layer, mask "fire-breath" area with 15px feather, color yellow, adj transparency, set fire to trees- oh wait, I mean add fire to new layer using EyeCandy Fire filter, paste in Tokyo in the background, paste in jet on new layer, adjust colors, sat, brightness, contrast, transparency on various layers, a little of this a little of that, some Blue Oyster Cult theme music and voila!

Masked trees in the foreground
Adjusted Levels on background to balance with foreground
Converted to Monochrome with Hue/Saturation
Another layer of levels for overall contrast
2 layers of sharpening for contrast and sharpness
Colorized with Hue/Saturation
Added Noise
Sharpened again
