CHANGE DEADLINE on Advanced Weekly Challenges

I have made trips to Yosemite, Death Valley, Sedona AZ and could not use them in the weekly challenges because I'm driving home Sunday night and no time to do even basic editing.

I suggest the weekly advanced challenge be changed to Thursday night. This way we can get our challenge by Friday then go on a weekend trip and get some great opportunities on the trip.

This gives us more time during the week to do our image selecting and editing of the images.

This should increase the quality of the advanced challenges.

fulgent -- I moved this to Web Site Suggestions so we can keep up with it easier.

Fulgent makes an interesting point, one that had not occurred to me since I'm retired anyway and every day is a weekend for me... I second the motion on this one.

Another argument, though, could be that by getting the challenge on Sunday night (Monday morning), I have all week to think and plan, then shoot on the weekend in time to submit on Sunday.

That's a good point too Karma; so why not Monday night. Gives the weekend warrior an extra evening to edit, while still allowing most the week for planning.

So, run Basic on Monday and Advanced on Wednesday?

How about bumping the open challenge to Thursday and relocating the member challenge to Tuesday?

+1 for changing the deadline on member challenges.

changing the dates can also help those who only have internet at work (as surprising as it might sound... there are some), and not working on sunday leaves them very few days to have a chance to shoot and submit..

I really liked Robt's suggestion as for mondays and wednesdays!

I second the motion! Weekends are the primetime for most working members and a weekday deadline would help immensely. For those of us that are retired it makes little difference, but I certainly sympathize with the rest of DPC.

I vote for leaving it how it is! because basically this side of the world it is on Monday and Wednesday, don't mean to be selfish or anything!!

I vote for monday /wednesday or tuesday/thursday.

People are grumpy on Monday mornings, and that's when they get a first look at the member challenge shots now. I reckon we move it to a different day, those early voters are likely to go higher.

Just a theory. I support this move.

As another retired guy who never thought much about this I have to agree with Robert. Maybe Tuesday / Tursday works best for everyone on both sides of the pond.

Might as well be selfish, everybody else is. Except maybe the retired guys.

I might as well chime in... my mama always said that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I usually always listened to my mama. She was a wise woman. ;o)

Still using PS 1.0 Laurie? That was a pretty cool tool... jejeje™ Just 'cuz it works, doesn't mean it can't work better, or more equitably. An interesting point has been raised; the current timing of the Advanced challenges essentially precludes the entering of photos shot on weekends away from home. And, realistically, for a lot of our shooters weekends are the only time they have free when they CAN leave home...

Well, I for one don't want to vote on 600+ entries every time if rules are changed to allow for more people to participate. I get off my butt to shoot for a challenge when I feel compelled to do so, even with three kids, a job, and a very busy life. If it's something you want to do, you make the time.

I have to agree with Laurie here. Seriously though.. we all have the same amount of time to enter challenges. There's still Monday - Thursday to shoot for a challenge you know you might miss because of a trip on the weekend. Also, if you're going to miss it.. so what? So you miss one challenge.. *spins his pinky finger in the air* Pete forbid anyone should do *that*. If you're going on a trip *specifically* to shoot for a challenge.. well, just get home an hour or two before the challenge starts.. how hard is it to get home by 10pm on a Sunday evening? Most people work on Monday mornings anyway (not counting specific holidays). A couple of hours is plenty of time to work on a shot.

It just floors me that there's always *something* that NEEDS to be changed around here.. when really, if you just sit down and think about it.. nothing really does.. tweaks here and there.. additions (like the profiles), are always nice.. but we've been running this challenge method for a very long time, and I've never seen an outrageous amount of bitching about it before.

Yes, good points have been raised, but when you really think about it.. they're really just cosmetic in nature. Nothing serious. I go away a lot of weekends myself.. but I still don't see a need to change things.

For me, the member challenges end at 9:00 PM on Sunday. I would definitely support a change as I've missed many challenges because I was driving home when the challenge ended.

Easy for you to say Artyste. I looked at your images that maybe were shot out of town and only found one in White Rock, B.C.

I believe that your personal interest have more to do with this. You don't even care for landscapes:
As much as I despise shooting landscapes, (and the fact that they are over-loved on DPC), I love to see one that is a little bit different, .....
Your portfolio says your interests are People, Urban Shots, Studio Shots and occasion Wildlife shots (you have your own wildlife park in your home town too).

If you really want to see "a little bit different" landscapes then why make it difficult for us that like landscape and travel photos to find them for you and enter them into the challenges.

My primary interest is landscape, travel, nature and wildlife photography. And I would like to enter challenges reflecting my interests just as you get too. Not just quick studio shots just for the sake of having something to enter.

When I go on a shooting weekend I use a 4gb card and spares. I may have over 500 images. It may take me 3 hours to download the card to the computer. Then pick the best shots, then edit them.

Also in California the deadline is 9pm. Yosemite 5-7 hours from L.A. area. Same for Death Valley. I would need to start home Sunday morning just to make the deadline for a challenge. Well if I travel 300-400 miles I want to maximize my weekend trip.

Changing the deadline day IS JUST A TWEAK. I'm just suggesting changing the day. Not the time, not changing the method, not changing anything else.

If you really feel it's just a cosmetic change then don't blow it up to a big problem.

I would support the idea of changing the deadline from sunday to monday. There is no way you can make it home and be able to edit files before 9pm if you are out on a weekend.
06/10/2005 07:46:13 AM · #23
International and time-zone issues aside, it's reasonable to say that people generally have more available time to participate (and the whole idea IS to participate and in doing so, learn and help others learn) on weekends. That being so, it seems reasonable to modestly adjust which day challenges end so the deadline falls sometime inside the normally understood work week.

Whole day or weekend shooting trips would make a mid-week deadline more accessible for many while there haven't been any suggestions yet -(that I've seen)- that changing would make them less so for others.

I like the idea of Monday & Thursday.

I'm starting a show, and the weekends will be the only time to shoot, edit, and submit for me.
