well, i not only have a stack of these
but i also have a dictaphone ;-)
as to 'venue', i think it's more of common sense than common courtesy. if i saw your family picnicing, i would probably shoot them from a distance, incorporating them into the environment, before switching to a shorter lens and approaching you to take some candids.
here's a bunch of kid shots i took the other day. so far, the parents are a lot happier with mine than they are with theirs ;-)

I don't get the attraction. Why would you even bother to come closer? Why not let the family enjoy their picnic unmolested?
p.s. - You better switch to a macro lens, because the only thing you'd get in focus would be my nose in your face. ;^)

i'm attracted to people, especially those having fun. they make for great moments to capture. sometimes, i get better photos of the family than they can get for themselves ;-)

yeah, i hear ya. all the same, there's a huge difference between running up to a family and attacking them with your camera and approaching them peacefully. if i ask someone politely and they go off the deep end, that's more their deal than mine... |

HI there. I lecture on photography at a college in Leeds and have been a practicing photographer for the past 23 years, including running my own freelance commercial photographic business. As the current law in the UK stands, there are no restrictions on taking pictures of people in the streets and children have no special rights with this regard. For further information, please see 'The Law of Photography and Digital Images' by Christina Michalos, published by Sweet & Maxwell. ISBN: 9780421764705. This is the book used by many lawyers. Also have a look at the NUJ Freelance pages at www.londonfreelance.org and read an article on the September 07 pages called 'Who Can I Photograph', written by Mike Horderness.
I fully support any sensible laws that protect children but to blindly impose laws that prevent the millions of innocent amateur and professional photographers, including those are also parents amongst us, is utterly stupid. It would be almost impossible to make laws like these work, especially as there is an increasing number of security and street cams within our environment and also an increasing number of webcams available at points of interest and these presumably, would come under the same laws! |

| can any one help me, I'm writing an essay on the fact that we are not able to photograph our children in public etc, I am doing the research on it and I was wondering if any one had any idea when and on what radio station ken Livingston spoke about banning it completley. I am trying to find it so that I can listen to it. Can any one help? |
