Walmart won't print...
06/07/2005 10:52:14 PM · #2
I just did a bunch--with one batch, they did ask me if I took the pictures, and then the photo manager explained that I probably should fill out the waiver each time. But I gave him a funny look and he was nice and didn't make me fill it out.

Actually, it was a compliment that he asked ;)

Edit: I should explain. They will print them, unless they have a copyright logo on them or stamp on the original you bring to reproduce. But they may make you sign a waiver assuming any responsibility for copyright infringement.

You can put a copyright release on file with Walmart too. We have one at our local walmart and they print our photos just fine. They will call the "studio" if I don't have id - but I am the studio!

They print all my stuff.. some professional looking, some not, but I've been aroud long enough that they know me... They usually are asking about my latest photo adventure before I even get close to the desk...

Thanks for the "real life" inputs. I just saw this earlier and thought it was interesting.

I've had the same thing happen at Walgreens. Said my stuff looked pro and couldn't print it. I was floored, but then a little flattered, then a little pissed off at the inconvenience.

My experience with Walmart was mixed.

1) The prints came out nice, but often too dark -- even when I repeatedly tried to color match (I even tried their printer profile, and converted the photo to that profile following instructions on the web).

2) As an experiment, I printed a 4x6 of mine as is, then did color adjustments online using their tools, and printed both (same batch). Despite the color adjustments, they printed **IDENTICAL** LOL.

3) I had small bend/creases in the 8x10 photos from mishandling (they would pick up one side and let the photo flop on the other.

I tried two different stores, same negatives.

On a plus side, I would print a batch, go to pick it up, reject half, take the other half, try to adjust colors, go back and exchange the ones I didn't think came out good. As long as you return prints within 3 days, they won't hassle you. So if you don't like the way they came out, you can try again, until you get it right. Just the inconvenience of going back and forth!

And I did eventually get a good batch of 8x10 prints. Not perfect, but acceptible.

In my area, Wal-mart does not do as good a job as CVS.

But please, when the day comes that I get denied because someone thought my poor little pictures were done by a "professional" I'd prance out of the store with a gleeful smile and then do a little dance in the parking lot and then call every single person I knew and tell them about it and last but not least, post a new thread to share my excitement!

Edit: typo

Places like Walmart should shift the burden of copyright proof to the buyer by making them sign a release stating that they hold the copyright. It seems simple enough to me, but maybe there is some legality that would keep this from working?

i'm sick of seeing towns littered with empty wal mart buildings that have been vacated so they can build a super wal mart not to mention all the other vacant buildings from small shops that have been run out of business

support your local shops...or don't

your call totally up to you ;)

I agree. Reckon it would make an interesting photo project? Document the small mom-and-pops that have been shoved aside by the hypermarts?

That's exactly what they do, to my understanding. But I didn't read the release.

Then why are they refusing to print stuff?

The author of the article wanted more "punch" to the story - telling how you COULD get them printed just goes against what s/he said, so...
