I just submitted my first photo. And I would like to be able to read the comments on my photo without seeing who wrote it. It would be up to the author to not include their user name in the text.

The problem with this is that it gives users with mediocre or poor images less feedback. Right now, if everyone only voted on their first 20%, statistically, everyone would get aproximately the same number of votes.

The only valid reason for the suggestion of a 'skip' button I've seen is getting stuck on an image -- it's happened to me before. You're flying through the shots until you get to one that perplexes you, and you give up.

One more request for a description field on the voting page.

Many times I get comments from voters that they just don’t get it or they don’t see how this picture fits the challenge. Even museums have a description next to each piece of art to help the general public appreciate the piece.

The content of this description field should be regulated so as to prohibit anything that would reveal the identity of the photographer and/or anything other than explain the photograph.

Force a voter to enter a comment with the vote. I am personally discouraged by receiving many votes without comments, especially when the average score is lower than I like. I'd like to see justification for the vote, whether it be a high vote or a low vote.

I would like to bring more recogntion to photos other than the top THREE.

I think a good way to do this would be a pop-up menu with a pre-defined list of categories.

If you think a picture excels in a particular category, then you can nominate it by selecting that category from the pick-list, which would appear on each vote page.

Once voting is tallied, the winners of the special subcategories would have special ribbons or unique, nifty icons next to their pics as well.

Categories could include such things as:
Most Creative
Most Artistic
Best B&W
Best Color
Best Composition
Most Humorous
Most Poignant
Best People Shot
Most Shock Value
Best Technique
Most Interesting Mood

This would be a way to bring more diverse recognition to the site which would be good since the number of submitters are growing and getting into that top 3 is harder and harder.

good idea mag--i second this.
09/30/2002 01:49:33 PM · #82
I'll add my vote to mag's idea. There will be some comments that this will add even further to the "burden" of voting. However, this will be an optional refinement, I guess, that one will use or not use as required or able.

I have finally decided that I don't like the 'reply with quotes' option. I am finding it annoying to weed through comments that have already been made in order to find the reply. Since so many people use this feature I am sure that I am in the minority. It just seems pretty easy to me to just include a person's name if you want to address a particular comment.

I would like to know how the moderators rated a picture:

Average Vote: 5.000
Average Vote: 5.000 (according to users with cameras)
Average Vote: 5.000 (according to users without cameras)
Average Vote: 5.000 (according to MODERATORS)

i would love to see forum posts in reverse order, that is, the latest posts on top. that way i don't have to scrooooooooooll all the way to the end of a long post just to see the last entry.

very good idea Gr8, but if you miss half a day then either way you still have to scroll! whatever happened to the bookmarking idea? is it do-able?

Its not like we are some authority on good picture taking. I think
we were just the ones making the most noise when Drew was looking for
help keeping the site polite.

I would like to be able to SKIP photos when voting. When time is limited and you can't go through the entire bunch, it would be nice to vote on a select few. The current system of having one after another pop us does not appeal to me. If I vote on 20% of the entries, I would like to be able to pick and choose my 20%. Thanks for a good job on most everything!
Bitz[/i]

Personally, I'd rather people just vote on the images in the order they are shown. On average, last week people voted on about 75% of the photos submitted. If you vote on them in the random order in which they are presented, each phot should get approximately the same number of votes.

However, if you really want to skip a photo, you can but it's a little work. Just go back to the first voting page where all the thumbnails are displayed and click on the one you want to vote on.

that's true, but many times i post to a thread and then someone responds (just like this one right now) and that's when i don't want to have to scroll. if you want to read a whole thread, you'll have to scroll either way. with bookmarking, i'm assuming i'd still have to scroll through the thread to get to the place i want to be?

Gordon,

I think moderators take voting serious. A lot of people don't.

Gr8----oh i see what you are saying now! good point, especially with these long threads!

On making comments I would like to see them remain anonymous. Instead of finding out whom they are. If I get a negative comment that will not help my photograph I don't want to know who they are? I would like to comment on photographs but I would prefer to have some detail or knowledge of the picture before I could make a fair comment. Other wise I feel I would be just guessing at what the image needs.

I believe the upcoming site revision has plans to include the option to display most recent post on top.

Maybe just for kicks have a feature that lists the top photographers overall. It might be interesting and fun for the real competitive
people. I know we have the feature of the highest average score, but it would be cool to list them all in order. 1-500, or whatever
10/02/2002 01:03:36 AM · #95
John2 I can think of another site that is being torn apart because all anyone can think about is their rank in that list. That is not what this site is about. There is a new rank every week if you care about that but happily that ranking is fluid.
10/02/2002 03:05:58 AM · #96

You've GOT to make the site more friendly to the higher submission counts. In particular, the SINGLE page listing EVERY thumbnail has got to be reworked.

Otherwise nice site.

A next and last picture button, so that I haven't to vote every picture to go on to the next.

Everything is said - good ideas! Please - don't show more than image and titel while voting! It just prejudices the voter.

Thanks - Martina.

p.s.: A babelfish function for the non-native-english-speaker!?! I'd write much more comments...;o)

I would like the ability to NOT have comments left on my challenge photo. I would like to be able to turn that on and off.

You can switch it off to a certain extent - at least so you
don't see them until the end...
