People on this site sometimes surprise me. They complain because they do not get comments and then when they do get some comments, they complain about the comments. We all need to get a grip.

If I am going to be singled out like the people you are discussing I am not sure that I want to make any comments ever . I came here to learn and I am a shy person. I think that people need to get the feel of a place
before they are comfortable in commenting on photos. I read these forums and try to learn what is expected.

It is not common that people get singled out in the forums. This is a situation that could have easily have been one member with multiple accounts. In that situation, it would have been good that it was brought to our attention. (the prefered method would have been an email to the admin) However, since it is NOT one person with multiple accounts, this thread should have died when Lang clarified the issue.

ok ok so it`s not technically spam, so no rules broken.

I do like getting comments, but when i read a comment i would like to think that my photo had at least been looked at.

i still think that you just have to take the coment for what it is worth. whether it is helpful in a possitive or negative way. whether it was just a blurb like great shot or stinks. many times poeple are just trying to throw us a bone by writting some kindly coment. i myself enjoy getting any comment. i like the nice uplifting ones for encouragment and i like the negative ones to help me see if there is any merrit to my photo and thus teach me how to really look at my shots. My mother of all favorites is the comnts from the trully giffted members on this site that whether negative or possitive drive me and encourage me. its kinda like the better merritt the comentor has the more ill take it to heart, i guess thats not always true. Didnt you ever get a nagative and still usless commet like "sucks" from someone . then you turn around and look at there portfolio and see that they dont even have a camera or have never entered a challenge or if they did there shots really are bad.In conclusion what im trying to say is that when it comes to comments ,they have the potential for very good impact -like- teaching and learning ect... while others are just usless words althoug somtimes encouraging. we should take them with a grain of salt. and we should make them carfully.
I do think that we should read and consider every comment thou, because they were made by other people and since everyone has different likes, dislikes, and tasts, and styles etc... wether we like these comments or not they are what someone is thinking about your photograph.
just somthing to think about and please keep those coments comming. thanks, Kevin

You know, if these are high school kids trying to learn, it might be helpful to them if, when you see that comment, you write back and say, "Thanks so much -- what is it you particularly like about my photo?" or something like that.

It might make them really think about what they do like in the photo and respond with more of a critique (or expand a little bit the next time they say the same thing).

I know we're not here to teach high school photography, but certainly we're all learning from each other.

I don't think it's out of line to respond to a critique and ask someone to expand on their opinion, especially if it's done nicely.

We're all here learning photography, they just happen to be in high school. I agree with everything else you said too...
Someone might want to send them the link to our Tutorial on Giving and Receiving Feedback -- something not all of us older-than-high school types have mastered either...

I am one such teacher who is using dpc as a learning tool. I am also the one, I believe, that someone referred to as requiring them to vote on x percent and comment on y percent. And no, these are not my students. I am amazed about thread that complain about comments. The box says "comments" not critique, not indepth analysis of light and color upon the internet, or any such. As far as being marked helpful, if I get a comment that says, "Nice pic. Good color." I think to myself, "Hey, someone in the general population like my picture. And they thought the color was good. Let me look at it again and see if it is something I need to duplicate."

Also, like someone said, if you really and truly have a problem, or suggestion, for another member, you don't need to start a thread about them. Send them a message. If they are in a class, they may have a limited amount of time and don't have time to give you a full discourse on their thoughts and opinions of their work of art.

I'm intrigues ny the Mavica gang: must be sould destroying entering pics with a 0.3MP camera - especially a pretty awful 0.3MP camera. You can always recognise the shots, there's that patchwork kind of aretact that seems typical of it.

Try imagining yourself in that position - really wanting to enter and knowing that a 5 is just about the highest pssible expectation for our score, and you'd have to be some kind of genius to do that with that camera.

I am the teacher of the 7 students that many folks are speaking about lately! I thought this would be a good experience for them to show their work and critique photo's. I welcome your comments and thank you for pointing out that many comments are the same. That was not my intention when this all began, however you are right some have gotten lazy and thanks for bringing that to my attention. No harm was intended and we will be changing our format for discussing critiques. This has been a positive experience for my students and I want it to continue. They enjoy the sight and look forward to "our" weekly winners being displayed in class. I hope we have not offended anyone or caused a problem. Thanks again for all comments! Blick

I do hope you teach them that the correct spelling is "site"! :-)

I hope you teach them that grammar naziism is rude.

Uh, that'd be spelling, not grammar...besides, maybe they enjoy the sight of DPC every time they look at the monitor...

blick -- thanks for trying to make something constructive out of this. Perhaps the most important thing they can learn from this is that they will benefit from their participation in proportion to their own efforts...

Look everyone, im one of the students that all of this has been brought up about. If i thought this much would have happened because of commenting on photos the same way i never would have joined the challenges. Sometimes we get behind and need to hurry because we have about 4 other projects going a week and we need to get the critiques done.So if i offended anybody i really dont know what to say.

Chuckie,

Don't worry about it... You and your classmates are valued members of our little society and you don't need to worry about the 3 or 4 folks that are ranting that they don't like your comments... Next week they will start a thread complaining that they aren't getting any comments :) This has been going on for as long as I've been here.

Keep shooting, keep commenting, keep smiling :)

You may enjoy having YOUR kids grow up being unable to spell even the simplest of words, but I don't. What you call "naziism" (though I seriously doubt you have any grasp of that concept), I call a basic education. When teachers get sloppy about these things, then so do the kids, and I will call it out every time I see it whether you like it or not!

An acceptable definition of sight is:

Something worth seeing; a spectacle:

I would suggest that DPC qualifies as a "sight" as well as a site. Perhaps the reader owes it to the writer to consider that what they said is what they meant.

I dont like you very much Marbo. Like the teacher said we dont have enough time to give long critiques. And That is a Pic of Bruce Lee. From Enter The Dragon when he catches the dart. I put it on my profile picture out of respect.

To reiterate my original comment: I was not offended by the comments, I just thought it was INTERESTING that someone would copy+paste comments like that. Now that we have an explanation I am very happy to receive these comments and hope you guys enjoy DPC as much as I do!

cheers,

I know Pesinn meant no harm in starting this thread. It is unfortunate that this has escalated to the level it has. It certainly wasn't his intent (or mine) to point out any multi-account users or any infringment on the rules. These things certainly never crossed my mind when I posted.

Here's a College lesson for you guys... Two realy life examples.

1) When people post in anonymity they feel unrestrained by usual decencies they would otherwise afford each other.

2) The written messages can never replace face to face communitation. The sublte inflections that differentiate a light hearted comment and the malicious, will always be missing.

Please don't judge us by our collective stupidity. I hope you all stay and enjoy what this site has to offer. =o)

Whatever, don't worry about it. This really isn't a big deal is it? :)

That's very true. But you shouldn't say it's good or bad because you also get people's honest opinion, without getting attacked for NOT being polictically correct, etc. I think "it" is good in a lot of ways also.

A skilled writer can make these inflections, although not as well as verbally (in most cases).

LOL, "our collective stupidity"? I don't think anyone here is stupid. Anyone with an opinion contributes in some way. I'd rather call "our collective intellegence".
