I am new to this site, and new to photography. I've had my digital camera for a while, but only ever used it to take pictures of my daughter, my dogs, vacations, etc. I never really thought about lighting, the rule of thirds (which is very cool by the way, makes a huge difference), etc. but this site has gotten me to think more about photo composition and less about just the subject.
Thanks for any pointers you can give.

Nice shot, I like it (being a pool shark myself :)
I would simply clean that ball and make it spotless. Also, I would flatten that piece of the table where you can see a fiber on the shadow of the ball.

I like the shot, too, and my comments are the same as Zadore's. Making the ball sparkle, especially, would add to the shot imo. The lighting's good, though, and the composition is fine.

| Thanks... that was as clean as I could get the 8-ball. I worked hard to make it so you couldn't discern the edge of the 8-ball from the background. I didn't see the cloth fibre at the time of the photo. |

I like the spots on the ball. "Perfection" in a photo often leaves me cold, like it's an advertising shot or something. Reality is more appealing to me.

jackson, try some olive oil or some automotive wax on the 8-ball :) I like this shot as well, but you will soon discover that i like most black and whites anyway :)
Your photo somewhat reminds me of Langdon's Eight Ball - Corner Pocket photo from the Table Shot challenge way back in the dark ages... :)

I like this shot as well, but am having trouble picking out all the "why"s... The negative space is great and I really like the way it melts into the ball... I also keep finding myself liking the reflection of the shadow in the ball and the way it meets the actual shadow on the table...
This next thing doesn't bother me, in fact I like it, but some folks around here would take issue that the foreground is out of focus... Personnally I think it works well here, but in a challenge you'd see "bad dof" comments... |

I like it, but maybe you could have rotated the 8-spot up/ less centered ?
I don't like the marks on the ball at the top and the 8 square on (well
almost) seems slightly force too.
Maybe some other balls in the background really far away/ out of focus
might add some further interest ?
Cool shot though.

| wonderful shot all the way around. i love the fact the the ball doesnt look perfect. it fits the mood of the lighting which to me gives the feel of a pool hall or bar. the balls in those places never look new. it gives the shot some character and reality. if you had a perfect ball on a perfect felt then like lisae said you pretty much have a product shot that would look nice but wouldnt evoke as much feeling. in me anyway. keep up the good work. |

I really like your shot Jackson! People seem to be falling into two camps over it - those that want it to be even more pristine (clean the ball, remove the lint etc) - and those that like the real life gritty feel of it.
Personally I could go either way. However, if you wanted to go the "real life" way then I'd suggest adding in some extra "clutter" to the picture with perhaps a couple of extra balls out of focus in the background and maybe even some grain. As it stands right now with just that one ball placed neatly away from a cushion it looks too posed.
Your lighting and framing are excellent here btw. Im really looking forward to your DPC submissions!

| I like it just as is. Other stuff in the bacground would take away from the neg space. The scratches on the ball and the felt fluff are just part of reality. This would have been a good one for next week but if you reshoot it then go ahead and put the number 8 off center. :) |

I like it as well, would have gie it a 7 depending on the challenge. I like how the DOF on the fabric is creating like a path for the ball ....
Like the others I like the melting in the backgorud. The 'stain' and the 'fiber in the shadow' do not bother me at all. I am on the edge of finding the picture a liitle bit 'cold' so ... these im-perfection give the picture some 'humanity'.
Try to get a shot for this week if you'd like too .... never too early to start in good faith with a shot like this one.
