Well, I've tried a few things, and I'm not happy with the processes on any of them. Anyone got any suggestions, experiences?

If you just want a web album and have some html experience, I recommend ALBUM.PL. It is basically just a CGI script that is very customizable. Alot of options, you basically define the look with your own HTML page, you can password protect sections, even allow others to upload pictures. More info is available here: //perl.bobbitt.ca/album/ and the author is very helpful with any problems you run into setting it up.

As far as just a software program, the best I've seen was Compupic Pro, but even that wasn't great.

Hope this helps.

What few things have you tried so far that you are not happy?

I use Imagemagick combined with scripts for creating thumnails, index pages, extracting exif data, unloading images from the CF card, etc.

Its much easier than mucking about with other peoples code.

Just to note, I believe you can use album.pl with Imagemagick.

Oh, BreezeBrowser, JAlbum, Portfolio, Gallery (an old release), Thumbs Plus, etc.

Just want to create simple thumbnail pages and link to images on simple pages - no tricks really at all, and no-one seems to have sensibly automated it. If I was any good at coding/ had any time I'd do it myself.

Shall try the album.pl thing though - sounds like it might be what I'm after

I'm curious : What was wrong with breeze browser ? I've been pretty happy with the HTML generation that it does - over a dozen different styles and plenty of control over how the files are created. I even converted one to build a custom ordering and email system that was pretty simple to do. It is very customisable and easy to change.

Example breeze browser galleries Most of these are straight from the tool or can be tweaked to give different styles.

Photoshop's later versions have webpage generating functions. (In 7.0 it's under "File" in the "Automate" section.)

Or Adobe has their new Photoshop Album software -- but I haven't used it so I can't recommend it or even tell you specifically what features it has, but Adobe stuff is generally pretty nice, so...

Well, I shall look at BB again ...

but I couldn't make it do what I've done on my site (below). Was only usng an old version though, so perhaps they've changed things a bit in 2.6

Photoshop 7 or Elements 2 creates it for you in just few clicks. All you need is a server to upload it to. The new Photoshop Album is good one to organize photos locally on your hard drive. If you want online photo album in 5 minutes try Fotki, with unlimited space, all you do is upload your images and your site is done. If you know little html, you can co-brand your site like this and will have the ability to add guestbook, comments, links, etc... and buy prints at low cost.

Gosh this is frustrating - all i want to create is a page of simple thumbnails, no text, that link to individual pages of each image with a simple title: everything so far puts borders on things that I don't want, adds EXIF information that I don't want displayed, won't give me the opportunity to set the cell spacing or number of thumbs per row ... not difficult stuff, I wouldn't have thought.

Photoshop may well do it, but I don't have that kind of money.

And I want it to be on my server, not someone else's.

Still thanks for all the suggestions though

Photoshop indeed is the solution. If money is the problem, do you know that you can hacked a full version of Photoshop? Also, try WYSIWYG html editors like Frontpage, its easy!

:-) Hacked! well ...

Anyhow, I'm getting there. Having to edit the HTML code for the BreezeBrowser gallery templates, but that isn't proving too tricky.

That was going to be my suggestion as well, e301. JAlbum also lets you create your own HTML templates.

If you're trying to copy exactly what you currently have on your site, it might be easier to use a program to just create your thumbnails and then handcode (if you know how) an HTML page, since you aren't creating pages for the larger images, just linking to the actual graphic.

Damn, and now the FTP won't let me in to the server!

Must be Friday afternoon.

Have you thought about using PHP?
If you have access to a php enabled server and familiar with html coding it should not be to complicated.

This one seems pretty basic:
//www.devscripts.com/visit.php?sId=1903

...and this one is realy popular:
//gallery.menalto.com/
