| My wife and I were watching that new Fox reality show called Hell's Kitchen and I have to say that guy is a total prick. Even by prick standards. But it did raise an interesting question. Given that oppurtunity, would you take that kind of abuse? I mean sure they get a Resteraunt out of it if they win, but imagine going all the way through that bullspit and loosing. I think there are a lot less risky ways to go about opening your own business. |

Ah yeh he did the first series over here. Him being horrible is all part of the fun! That's the only reason the show is popular.

Kind of like the guy on Fear Factor that ate 9 slugs, but didn't go on to the next round because he needed to eat 10 (and drink a shot of bile).

Yes he was a total prick even by major Chef/Prick standards. I'm sure he's playing his role over the top a bit.
I have woker for plenty dudes like that over my 25 years in the business and have acted exactly like him at times but in much smaller doses having been in many pressure situations. When people quit on you or walk out in the middle of service you start to mellow out. They say "never fire a dishwasher unless you are prepared to wash dishes", well if a line worker or prep guy walks, the same theory applies.
I worked for Gray Kuntz and he was one yellin Mo-Fo and he could also yell in six different languages. Not a lot fun but his kitchen and food were top notch. Most of the best kitchens are run by Picasso like individuals and when art meets the bottom line($$$)and time pressure (being ready for service) you get some wierd Sh*t flying.
Some chefs are taking an much more Zen approach lately which is good but there's still that old time, residual hard nose Chef attitude that permeates the industry.
I worked with Thomas Keller for a while and he was serious and strict he didn't need to be mean, his skill and knowledge commander your respect from the word go.
You're right nobody would watch if he was a nice guy...leave that to Emeril.

Most pricks know they're pricks and love the negative feedback that regular peons give them. I work in HR training and call tell you it's a proven scientific fact that pricks get the best jobs, the best offices, and make more money than the people who are forced to tolerate their bullshit.

Yes, being a Prick has it's perks. I'm a charter member PA (Pricks Anonymous)...it's like alcohol...it's addictive. I come from a long line of Pricks, so it's not my fault.

What is less risky than getting it for free....anytime you start a business it's a risk, usually it is your money and your families well bein that you are putting at risk. here, you go on tv put up qith some clown's moronic ranting bullshit and if you're lucky you walk away with a restaurant....so....tell me again, where's the risk? |

There may be a slight bit of hamming it up for the program, but Gordon Ramsey has made his reputation of being a demanding hard b'stard.
He is an ex football player (soccer) and is one of the top chefs in the UK.
He demands perfection, and gets it. He has been known to physically throw staff out of his kitchen. and paying customers out of his restaurants.
I bet you will find that at the end of the show the survivors will say that they have learnt a lot from him.....

| Gordon Ramsey is on tv tonight - Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares - him trouble shooting a fading restaurant. For all his (very many) faults, he is an excellent chef (probably the best in London - certainly has more michelin starred restaurants in London than any one else). |

I've watched Gordon Ramsey on his BBC shows for the past year or so and he is a little over the top, but he was WAY out of control on the fox show Hell's Kitchen. He goes into restaurants that have bottomed out and turns things around for them and gets them out of the red and back into profit by replacing chefs, waitstaff, recipes, etc.. he is good at what he does.
I am so sick of America ripping off UK shows. Off the top of my head here are a few, uk: changing room, usa: trading spaces, uk: the office, usa: the office, uk: coupling, usa: coupling, uk: pop idol, usa: american idol... etc I love the BBC and the original shows are much better than the americanized versions. So if you want to see the real Gordon Ramsey, check out BBC America on your cable or satellite tv.

He sure did have the foulest mouth I've seen on primetime in awhile. But I realized while watching the dining patrons, that it was more than likely staged...them knowing ahead of time that they would sit and watch the kitchen staff fail miserably for 2-3 hours. There would have been far more drama, as the 'general' public would not have merely laughed or simply scowled as most of them did (case in point: a table of 4 blonds that went back to tell G.R. that their feelings were hurt that he told them to f*** off, and then giggle their way back to the table)
It was interesting, amusing, and at times downright painful for me to watch. I'll be tuning in next week, for sure. |
