Hello
I have just purchased the 20D and have a question.
How long should the battery last? I had a 300D and the battery was good for at least 500 shots using some flash... I'm hoping this one will be as good.
Is the vertical grip worth purchasing?

I don't know how many shots I get with a charge but I do forget the 20D even has a battery at times. It is very conservative. I bought two third party batteries for backup from Battery Barn.com for less than $50USD. Very satisfied.

Well..have had a 20D since Friday afternoon. Have taken over 800 shots (flash and no flash mixed) and still have not had a low battery warning. It is in the last stages of effective use however.

on a single battery you should be able to get between 800-1300 shots, with the vertical grip and 2 batteries you should be able to reach 2000 shots, that is continously ( all in one day) as the batteries loose power if kept in the camera.
the vertical grip to me is just as important as the lens, without it I wouldn't be able to hold the camera steady. |

vertical grip is probably pretty useful for portraiture.

It's better. I always carry a spare in my pocket but hardly ever have to use it.

I don't think so. Certainly not for battery life. When it first came out there was a lot of talk on the internet about that grip not being made with the usual Canon quality. It apparently doesn't fit as tightly as earlier canon grips. Maybe if you have large hands, or intend to do a lot of portrait orientation shooting.

I usually get between 650 to 850 mixed, flash/no flash. The "off-brand" batteries seem to hold up best for me.

I can go several days even 2 weeks on a single battery. Did all the grand canyon, hoover dam, painted desert, meteor crater, las vegas on one battery.. Probably 500 shots atleast.. But charged it at the hotel that night. It wasn't dead or even half there. I'm really pleased with the 20D battery performance. My friend has a 300D with the battery grip and his lasts as long as mine now..

The 20D uses a BP511-A version of the battery which has I think 1500 mAmp's vs. 300D's BP511's 1100mAmp's. Plus the DIGIC II suppossedly uses less energy as well. I remember close to a 1000 shots per Steve's Digicams website with the BP511-A vs something like 600 with 300D. If you get an aftermarket battery with more mamp's (I've a 1800 mamp version from Sterling Tek), it should give you more shots.
As for the BG E2 grip, there was a defect and it is supposedly being corrected by Canon. Having two batteries in the grip should in theory double your shooting time. I love having a grip not only for more power but for comfort and improved handling.

The 20D battery lasts quite awhile.. don't know specifically but as another poster said.. sometimes I forget it has a battery.
I would highly recommend the battery grip and a second battery.
I recently got back from a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Orlando, Florida (yes Wyoming then Florida) and using the battery grip with 2 batteries I didn't have to charge them once and I filled up not one but TWO 2gig memory cards during my trip.
Jackson Hole, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Orlando, and Disney World couldn't even drain those batteries. I was very impressed. |

Hi-ho,
Like everyone else I'm getting 500-800 shots of 'normal' shooting with my 20D...
There are some issues with the grip, see This thread which means with only one battery in the grip I sometimes only get 200-300 shots off before it shows low battery.
The web link in that thread suggests a fix is on the way, so if you're interested in the grip I'd hold off till the fix is available.
I got the grip for the vertical controls, and because I've got largeish hands and prefer a big camera. But the extra battery life will come in handy when mine is fixed...
This all depends on your shooting style of course. If you spend 2 minutes studying each frame on the LCD after taking it, always use servo focus mode, and shoot bursts of 10 shots in continous mode, and use the onboard flash a lot don't expect the 1000 shots some people are saying they get.

With the bg-e2 power grip the bateries almost last me a month it is so great....

Last Saturday morning I was shooting sports pictures with my 20D, equiped with the 2-battery pack, using a Flash on every shot, and I took well over 350 shots, and was still going strong at the end of the morning.

Ya....
It would appear that there are 'issues' with some of them. I spoke to my local camera shop about the notice on Canons website, and they said that not all of the BG-E2's shipped are elligible for the fix, so I assume that means some of them don't have the problem...
edit: They also said that Canon have not yet announced details of the fix, or when it will be available...
Also, if you're lasting a month on two batteries, you need to shoot sports events more often, it'll cycle the batteries more. :-).
