It is very helpful when critigueing a shot in depth to have some notes from the photographer about your shot, what you were trying to achieve, how you attempted to achieve it, that kind of thing. This gives us a better idea of where the critique should lead.

At one time, the Critique Club was instructed that they did not have to leave a real comment on shots that have no notes. They were told that they could leave this note: 'Because of your lack of photographers notes, I do not know what you were trying to achieve with this shot.' as a valid critique. I hated this idea and would simply not comment on shots and let them drop out of the que without comment. This meant that I could not comment on any other shots in the que until the next challenge started. This isn't fair to other photographers wishing to have critiques, especially those that did take the time to include notes.

Recently I have been very inactive in the Club. This is one of the reasons that I kinda dropped out of sight as far as the Club is concerned. I would like to become active in it again. However it is very frustrating to attempt a critique on the shot that the photgrapher didn't even bother to put their own notes on. Therefore I may actually start putting this psuedo critique on shots that have no notes so that I can move on to other shots that do have notes attached...

Now THAT's an excellent idea. This is one of the reasons I, too, am inactive in CC; that, plus lack of evidence that anyone reads or appreciates these critiques, for the most part. But how, I ask myself, am I to critique an image with NO information on the making of it appended?

I'm gonna start doing just what you used to do. If there's nothign to work from, a polite kiss-off and move on :-)

You know what.....that makes a LOT of sense.

*hits self in head*

I'm sorry :-( I'm one of those bozos who doesn't always put notes with their pics.

But I will reform from now on!!! It really does make sense though. How can people in CC tell us what we could do better if they don't know what we've done?

Also, I think it's REALLY cool that there are people with the time and the know-how to give in depth critiques. The critiques, for me, are one of the best things about this site. This place is kind of my school....and there are some fabulous teachers that I've been learning from.

So please please please keep up the wonderful work and know that there ARE people who really do value your critiques!

And we'll try to put more notes on there for ya :-)

Thanks for the reminder. Is it okay if we post our own comments after the challenge? For my current entry for example, I requested a critique, but due to a lack of time I couldn't add any intelligent comments. I would like to add them as regular comment, because as a registered user I cannot change the description anymore.

I have talked toManic about this and he also mentioned to email them and they would put in back in the que and give you another one. But your idea sounds a lot better. Like Bear said a polite kiss off and "next" If you have time to mark it for a critique you can enter in some sort of description.

The other day I happened to stumble upon a critique on one of my photos that was a couple of months old and I had no idea it was there.
I then immediately wrote a thank-you note and explained why it took me so long.

Do YOU send off a quick PM to let the person know they have a critique to get excited about?

I always send a pm informing that I have left a critique and if they have any questions to pm me through my profile.

This may work for some Critiquers, however, I personally try not to look at all the comments untill I have studied the shot for some time. As such I may miss your added comments. Also when we get a shot to critique, there is no seperator between comments made during and comments made after the challenge so we may not realize it was added after the fact.

This brings up another good reminder. If you recieve many good comments during challenge, PLEASE uncheck the critique club box before the challenge ends. At any given time we have HUNDREDS of shots to attempt to critique. If you really don't need a critique anymore you can free up a slot for some one who does...

How soon after a challenge do you start to critique? Often I give some additional comments or make a statement after the challenge is over. If I wait about a day, it is pobably gonna be the last comment that image will ever receive.

Once voting is over you can go in and change your description.

It really depends on when I have time... But like I said, I try MOST of the time not to look at the other comments untill I have at least started the critiqueing process. I don't want to be affected by what others thought...

Only if you're a blue shirt. Registered users do not have a portfolio hence the My Portfolio option doesn't do anything...

That at least is a good start. Sometimes though it is helpful to understand what kind of feeling were you trying to evoke with your shot. Sometimes it is obvious depending on the shot itself or the Challenge topic, but sometimes we need a little help.

"I'm aware this image is a little soft and a little dark, but I was trying to evoke a sense of sorrow and despair, and I was trying to get that across somehow. The burned-out whites of her eyes were intentional; I was going for the zombie look here.

Gribbled the crankshim in PS, added some torque to the lollifrak, and finished up by whacking the conjugant with the reflux filter."

This would work nicely.

I was gonna say a mispelled word but I actually got it right! :0)

dis·par·i·ty
1. The condition or fact of being unequal, as in age, rank, or degree; difference: “narrow the economic disparities among regions and industries” (Courtenay Slater).
2. Unlikeness; incongruity.
05/30/2005 03:44:58 PM · #19
Yeah, I know what it MEANS, sheesh; my question was "What disparity?" — where in this thread IS there a disparity? YOu must have found one, to say that...

I'd like to think that someone who has checked the box to request a critique cared enough about it to check back and see if they got one. And it's not hard to do this regularly - one doesn't need to go back and look at every image in one's portfolio - all one has to do is go to one's profile and click on the link to Comments Received.

Bingo!

I do usually PM people but... come on... if people are requesting that CC members give time up to write the critique they can surely at least keep abreast of the comments they are getting on a regular basis?

Bumpin' cause I want everyone to see...
