Ever wonder what killed your houseplants?
Chances are pretty good it was "SCALE." A little known, but hardcore killer of houseplants. I have some trees as old as 10 yr. old in my house, and I constantly fight these. They are relentless. Unforgiving...........and constant killers.

Why? House plants don't get exposed to Acid Rain, or insects. Scale can thrive in an environment free of natural predators and a lack of leaf watering.

I wanted to see these killers up close....so I super Macro'd. You typically will not notice these plant killers on your plants, but you will know the aftermath. They spew sticky sap all over your leafs and floor while your plant dies of dehydration. Go figure. It's Ugly.

Yes, we have a couple of tropical plants that also have scales. We may be nearing the end of the rainbow in terms of eliminating them. We move the plants to a shower and spray with a solution (40:1:8 of water:soap:alcohol) 3 times over a 10 day period, leaving the solution on for a short time and then rinsing.

The sticky substance is not generated by the scales themselves, but is a reaction of the plant to the scales. Also, be careful of the proximity of other plants as cross-infestation is easy. Unfortunately, many of these plants sit in stores with scales all over them and the consumer (us, for example) are non the wiser.

Those are some great pictures with excellent detail. You've really made them so much larger than life.
