My favorite technique for taking out the background is to paint a mask (in a new channel in Photoshop) with a soft-edged brush, then use that to create the selection for blurring, filling, etc. I find it more accurate -- especially if you can use a tablet and stylus -- than using the lasso or any other selection tools, even with feathering applied.

If you have mask angular shapes, use can also use the pen tool.

Fantastic job on Take number two!

Jo Ann, you now have yourself a fabulous studio shot :-) All I would suggest after crabappl3's great job is to soften the light relfections in the eyes so it is looks more like a studio setting. Great photo! Keep it up.

i did something similar with this pic:

In the original, the background was bricks, a screendoor, a leash, a welcome mat, and more clutter. This totally changes and improves the pic.

The way I do it is go into quickmask mode and paint out the background. Same effect as the lasso but easier to work with, as you dont have to do the whole selection in one swoop, and if you make mistakes you can erase them. Search photoshop help for 'quick mask'.

:-D
