Anyway... there are some really great ideas in here... keep them coming and I'm sure you will probably see some of these ideas come up as challenge topics in the future :)

It's up to the photographer. He could photograph the letter "B" on a paper or he could photograph his interpretation of the letter. He can do what ever he wants. I think it would be fun to see how people would approach a challenge such as... the letter "B". I think almost all of the photographs would be of a subject that begins with the letter "B" but I think we would get some interesting shots in between.

I'd actually like to see W, M, S Z or some such similar looking letter... might get some creative interpretations on those.

I had just read something about someone trying to accomplish something in the same method that another photographer did. I wonder how it would go, if the challenge was to take your favorite photo out of any of the challenges that placed in the top 3, or top 10, and try to do your OWN version of it, but you couldn't chose it if it was your own photo (I wouldn't have to worry about that lol). I know this would be a frusterating challenge, but it might make some people do some research as to how to get different effects, or how to accomplish a certain look that otherwise, they may never have tried. The result... the best replica possible of that photo. Maybe even chose your favorite photo, no matter WHAT place it finished, as long as it was in the DPC archives. The title would be the challenge and the place it finished. for example "Childhood #1" or something like that. Don't know if it would work, but I think I would find the result interesting, at least.

"Time (without clocks)": photograph the passage of time, without using a clock or other timepiece

"Numbers" or more specifically just one number, eg "3": depict a numeral, or have a specific number of subjects within the shot

I often try to do this sort of thing with 'famous' photographs.

Usually I end up learning a lot and going in a different, more personal
direction but using another technique or idea as inspiration for a challenge
ould be pretty good.

One of the interesting aspects of this is to create challenges that work across cultures and around the world.

Parking lot: Take a interesting picture of a parking lot. Colour or b&w, day or night, full or empty.

Silence: Photograph an image that evokes a sense of silence.

Separation: Photograph an image that evokes a feeling of separation.

Elevators/lifts: elevators/lifts can be dingy and beautiful, plain or decorated, single or en masse.

Construction: Take a photograph of a construction site, a building in development. It could be a hole in the ground, a half-finished barn, or a nearly finished skyscraper.

Trams, trains, trolleys and buses: Create the image that best sums up public transit for you.

Here's my idea.....

You are required to use a cheap camera. Borrow one if you have to, or pretend you have one. Take the best picture you can of any subject.

Aw, just joking...but then maybe I would have a chance to get into the top 100. LOL

I like Heather's idea of re-creating winning photos of past challenges. That would be fun to see what people come up with and how close they would get to the "real" thing. Or an individual's version of the winning photo. I'm already thinking of some humorous out takes using apples. LOL In any event, I would think it would be a complement to those winners whose shots they are attemting to re-create.

I've thought about doing this quite few times, I've got a one megapixel
point and shoot that's about 5 years old that I keep thinking about using
for a challenge entry.

Maybe I could reshoot this prior entry and title it "Transfer Station"

Jak,

On a challenge like the song title challenge, would you suggest titling the photo with the name of the song and the author?

I would love the song title challenge, and I would like to title it with the title of the song. I think it would be cooool. HOWEVER, lots of different music, lots of different contries. I think people would either get lots of "I don't get it", or people cold just make up something, give it a cool title and SAY it was a song.
However, I would really like this challenge.

How about restricting the titles to one source -- The Beatles.

How about night photography or abstract?

Rust:
Take a picture of anything that is rusted. Keep in mind that the rust has to compliment the main subject.

I like the idea of a challenge with a "color" theme. One specific color would be nice.
Silhouettes...photograph anything, person, place, or thing backlit to produce a strong silhouette.
Foliage...Photograph any foliage of any plant. This may be a single leaf or cluster, tree, or group of trees.
Curves...Any subject that includes a curve or more than one curve.
Refreshing...Photograph anything that you would interpret as refreshing.
Framing...Use something in the image that frames a subject, such as a window, tree, etc.
Recreation and Sports...A picture depicting people using their leisure time. I NEVER see sports, and don't like sports, thus include "recreation."
Tools...any kind of tool, used by people to accomplish a task whether at work or play.
Shadows...Let's see everyone's most interesting shadow pictures.
Human/Animal interaction...People and animals share the same space, catch them interacting and photograph it.
Modes of transportation...any thing that moves people from place to place...Boats, cars, planes, trains, buses, trucks, and more.
Candlelight...photograph anything you want but it must be illuminated by candles. (one or more)
Wet surface...Take a picture of anything with a wet surface. If you need to wet it, that's fine.

A picture that tells a story, rather that just an image.
09/24/2002 06:45:33 AM · #48
From the above, the ideas that I liked alot were the Song Titles, Sports Photos and Silhouettes. Here are a couple of ideas as well:

11 O'Clock- Somewhere in your shot has to be something with 11:00 on it. Lots of interpretations are available, i.e. clocks, sundials, advertising, plane schedules, Clock towers, etc. This was run through the DPC chat and some great ideas came out.

Group Shot- A photo of three or more people, either posed or candid. Lots of interesting possibilities here and sometimes I think that people are downplayed at this site. Certainly a standard for photography. I don't envision a bunch of "Sears" portraits.

Heh, we don't do that sort of thing here :)

Think Austin has two buses or something like that, they are hard to find.
