yes, that was part of my point. I dont' know that I would want the most disgusting award, though!

I have had people make negative comments when I entered a photo of a flower (the voter was "sick" of flower photos), a macro shot (because the challenge "wasn't macro") and say if my photo was cheerful they wouldn't score it high because they "didn't like happy looking" photos.

At least if we had some kind of categories it wouldn't just be a popularity vote.

I also think people could distiguish between honorable mention and a placement in the top three, even though we have voters as mentioned above, most of us are pretty intelligent.

Maybe we could put the issue to a vote on the home page, and mention two or three options of recognizing great photos that didn't make the top three.

but wouldnt it be nice if, even though your pic didnt win, people recognized it for some special attribute? instead of it being forgotten in the dustbin of history?

i do.

I think all the votes count equally, and I think we're getting too much emphasis on numbers to the detriment of feedback, which will actually help the photographer.

If you think someone's photo deserves notice, leave them a really nice comment in boldface type.

Besides, probably the only really valid statistical marker here will be number of prints sold...

I always try to be in the upper 25% but since my first few photos, this doesn't usually happen. My average used to be over 6, and now if I get a 5.5 I feel I am doing well.

And I am trying very hard and now have a Sony f707 to create better photos. I am either not learning well enough or the competition is getting tougher. And even with more feedback then we used to get, it's frustrating week after week. Even though I am not here to get recognition, it still would be nice to have something to show that I made the upper cut.

I used to compete in another kind of competition, and we did get more entries when we moved to "awards of merit" vs, just three winners only, and nobody ever felt it took away from the top winners.

Maybe we should have a special ribbon for kids who beat their parents in a given challenge, as has happened to me AGAIN in the Weather challenge. Or maybe the parents need a support group to whine in...

i've always thought it would be cool if we had, in voting, a drop down list from which we could nominate pics for various categories like

Most Edgy
Best Technical
Most Original
Most Creative
Funniest
Most Disgusting
Most Emotional

Etc.

That way there would be more recognition for images other than the top 3.

What do you all think?

I really like this idea!! I would be willing to vote in these areas.

I'm with you two! I think this would be fun!
