I am looking for help on exporting all my folder's file names (exactly as they are) into excel in one or two easy steps. I can do one folder at a time, that's fine.

Currently, I've been highlighting the file name, copying and pasting to Excel to create my list. That takes forever, as you'd imagine! Why would I need this? 1. I need to database all my photos that I want on my site. I have done over 4,000 manually, but as I move on, I'd like a faster way. 2. At work, I need to keep track of all the files on my computer in list form for my boss. I can print folders with "print screen" but that's not what he wants. So, this would serve two important purposes in my life, and give some hours back to me that I really would appreciate.

So, I am seeking a way to export my folder list to Excel or even Word. I know it can be done because I export my Winamp song list all the time to html, then copy and paste in excel. But Winamp won't allow me to list my photos since they are jpg. So, that's out.

I am sure someone knows how to do this. Can you post here or link me to a tutorial?

Thanks in advance!

Go to a command prompt, then type:

d:

cd d:\Where\Your\Files\Are

dir /s/b > myfilelist.txt

Or, if memory serves me correctly, a DOS window in win2k+ has scroll bars, so if you run a 'DIR' command, you can just copy and paste all the filenames.

To further enhance on PaulMdx instructions, if you were to type

dir /s/b *.jpg >myfilelist.txt

This would give you a list of only the jpg files.
Change jpg to other extensions (eg psd, tif, gif) to give you a list of those files as well.
BobsterLobster instructions only work for about 100 or so files.

Then you get a text file with the file names a few header and tailing bits, but should be ablt to import the text file into access or excel or word, etc.

I could write you a little program that would dump the filenames into an Excel spreadsheet. It would take me about 5 minutes.

Hi Everyone,

I subscribed to this thread (email) and never received one. I am terribly sorry for not replying sooner! Mick sent me a PM and I am here to thank you all for your help!

My husband ended up creating a batch file for me and it's working pretty well. He didn't think he could do it at first, so that's why I wrote to the group. But, he was able to figure it out afterall! He used the method PaulMdx wrote about. And, thank you to bmscbruc for that tip!

Mick, it is very kind of you to offer to help! I really truly appreciate it. I would actually like to take you up on this if you don't mind sharing! I could use this for work, and it would be incredibly helpful!

Again, thank you all so much!
My best,
Arielle

Sure thing Arielle. PM me with your email address and I'll send it to you ASAP. The .exe file is only 224K, and only 100K when I put it in a .ZIP file. I can send you either one. Unfortunately I don't have an FTP site setup right now where you could download it.

You might try this site:

There's a tool called Directory Printer. It allows you to print out a list of what's in a directory. I believe you can also print the list to a text file (the older version used to be able to do that). If you can get it to a text file, it's a simple import in to Excel from there.
