I'm not a Nascar fan (just reminds me of watching a tennis match, but with more spectacular crashes), but I read through your whole post and found the way you were sharing your experience very compelling as it could apply to any type of photography. Congrats to a great guy and a great professional photographer! Keep it going, Skip!!

What a compelling, instructive read! Thankyou Skip.

Hey Skip! What a story!! I started reading it this morning, then realized I was going to be late for a "court date" if I kept reading.

The minute I got back from court, I looked up this thread to continue! An awesome story, amazing shots, and I totally love that blurry shot. How wonderful for you to get to "live your dreams".

And just remember, equipment doesn't begin to make up for passion and talent, and you've got those in spades my friend!

Congrats!

Skip, I saw the length of this thread the other day and said "I'll read it later". Well I'm glad I did. Just finished it. You're a fantastic photographer and writer as well. I'm sure you'll excel in your new career. Thanks for taking the time to share this story.

- John

p.s. - your Taxi picture is one of my favorites.

Very thorough narrative and the shots are terrific! Hope this springboards you toward profound dreams as yet unvisioned.

The writing is as good as the pics... Excellent to feel the enthusiasm rather than just reading a story. I would LOVE to see this story annotated with 400 pixel width images rather than the occasional links if there wasn't any exclusivity conflict.

I'd bet you could sell the story to a magazine if you looked hard enough.

As others have said, I'm not a NASCAR fan nor do I ever have time these days to read anything longer than a paragraph or two - but I found myself glued to screen reading your whole account. What a great story - well written. I'm so happy for you!

With this start, I predict a bright future with loads of great equipment and tons of fun for you!

You tell it like it is I guess and it's a great story. Your photos are wonderful. I suppose it doesn't hurt living in the heart of NASCAR country either. Top notch stuff!

Skip, this is awesome. I'll add my voice to those calling for you to get it published!

I'm chuffed as mintballs for you getting such a great opportunity, I'm as jealous as heck, and most importantly I'm inspired to try out a few new things if I ever make it to the track this year.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing! I hope to hear about future jobs!

Wow, Skip! A fantastic experience captured with excellent words and photos. You need to present this to all the Racing magazines.
I'm looking forward to your next article RE:Getting Published in the Real World. Congratulations!

Skip, great info and story.
My stepson and I were at the IRL race in Richmond last year, we stayed in the pit the entire race, it was a blast!
Best of luck to you!

Well Skip all I can say is I’m Jealous, I mean real jealous!! I was at Richmond too with my gear but not only did not have a press pass I couldn’t get a pre race pit pass like I had in Atlanta this spring. Soooo I did the best I could do from the stands. I really love to do this for the fun and hobby of it so I’m not sure how I’d feel about it as a job. Ahh who am I kidding I’d jump at a chance to shoot NASCAR for a living. I’d really love to get go to all the special places that only the press can go. I’m sure you had a blast, I know I would have.

I’m not too sure if this breaks Jason’s rules about giving things away but since I do this as a hobby I freely display my best here:

Richmond Fall 2005
Alanta Spring 2005
Richmond 2005 Indy Sun Trust 250

However, I don’t think I’d knowingly let someone else use my stuff without some sort of payment.

I had to laugh when I read your concerns about your silver camera and “wimpy” 75-300 lens. I felt exactly the same in Atlanta this year with my equipment. My only saving grace is I use a EF 100-400L IS lens so when it’s attached I look more like I know what I’m doing. It’s so funny to hear the crowd around you when you whip out that lens… Comments like “How many X is that thing?” or “now that guys got a camera.”

At least this time in Richmond I replaced my silver Rebel with a new 20D, although I had my trusty Rebel with me as a backup. I will say that I noticed one or two photogs down there on the track with a Rebel along with their other gear. Maybe one of them was you. ;-)

I’d love to see more of your shots if you have any up on a private website or something. Feel free to contact me via email if you want to compare notes. ;-) As to equipment, as I said, I use a 20D and/or a Rebel and my 100-400 as my primary setup. I also use my 28-135 IS and on occasion my 18-55 kit lens that came with the Rebel.

Well good luck with further assignments. I hope you get more and more.
