I know nobody asked for this today, I think someone was wondering about it last friday. I threw this quick reference shot together on Friday and then the weekend got in the way.

Using just windows the easiest way to find exif data of your un-edited* images, is by right clicking on the image, choosing properties and then view the Advanced Summary Page as outlined in this Pic:

* some (a lot of) Image editors will change/remove your exif data when you edit your pics - this is especially useful to shareware/freeware/demoware vendor who wishes to force you to upgrade to there pro version.

Never save an edit over your originals.

ED: Typo of course

Very lucid and useful little illustration, pollard. Make a quickie tutorial for that and get them to post it...

Just wanted to add a note that not all systems will show this; the installation of some software seems to change the behavior and Windows no longer displays the EXIF info :-(

Edit: I was incorrect, the Windows EXIF view is still there, just a brain fart I guess.

Thanx Robt. I will put a little something together in the way of a tut.

Kirbic, do you know which program alters Windows so that EXIF data is not viewable? I know most shareware graphix programs won't let you save EXIF in tact but haven't heard of anything mess with the shell of Windows.

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, which is the default viewer for .jpg files in Windows xp, will remove EXIF data if you rotate an image in it.

Now that you mention it I have seen that happen, with the fax picture viewer when I was working with Macros from my pro1...but it was seldom and WPFV would warn you that rotating and image would cause loss of stored information...Haven't seen it yet with my 20D and I rotate all my pics with WPFV...hmmm...very strange...

Just checked it and you are correct. An image from my 20D retains it's EXIF after being rotated in WPFV. I know that the info was not retained in pictures from some of my other cameras. It even forced me to change a challenge entry once. And I never got any warning, lol. As you say, very strange.

I'm assuming this is in Windows XP.
I run Windows 2000P and have no EXIF info available through the jpg's properties.

Guess I'll stick to Irfanview as my default image viewer - been using it for so many years,
(10 maybe) I don't think I would know what to do without it.

It can also be noted that while it worked for me with an original JPEG, it would not read anything but the basic info on the Canon RAw format, ".CR2". I guess it's useful as far as it goes, but is a bit limited.

I've discovered when I save for web the exif data disappears. How can I see the data using windows, after editing and saving an image for web? Is there any way?

Save for web, strips all the exif info out to make the image size as small as possible.

You need to look at your original to get the original Exif Info.
any edits after that will corrupt this data.

Thanks... So that means there is no way of getting the exif data of altered images, if I've lost have the originals, right?

Hi guys,

I discovered pixvue the other day (www.pixvue.com) it extends standard windows property windows with an extra tab which has ALL the exif information in it. Plus IPTC and XMP data as well. It also puts an IPTC and XMP editor on the right mouse click. And its free!

Its one handy little utility.

Cheers,
EZ.
