Thinking about finally upgrading to a dSLR. The ultimate question...Nikon D70 or Canon Digital Rebel XT??

You can't go wrong with either.

Go to the store, try the ones in your price range to feel them in your hand and then choose which one better meets your needs.

If you don't already have lenses then just go to the store and try both. How it feels, where the controls are etc. will help you decide. Both are highly regarded cameras.

I love my rebel xt, but I also liked very much the D70 when I tried it yesterday at the race track!
As stated before, try them both! And hook up with the one u like the most! U won't regret any of them, I can guarantee (la garantia soy jo)

Depends what you like, try both of them...then think what system you want to buy into. It is not so much which camera you want as which lens series you want and which future body you might want.

All "politics" apart, the most important question you have to ask yourself is: where you want to go with regards to "glass" it's all about the glass, People who chose a body and then by glass more or less become slaves to the brand, who wants to lose all the money in changing from one brand to the other.

it's no big secret that Canon is outselling Nikon world wide by a ratio of about 4/1 and in the studio the ratio is closer to 10/1. Obviously cameras like the 300d were big factors in the popularity of the brand, and this plays into the scheme of "get them to by a few lenses and we own them" but the truth of the matter is...it's all about the glass.

All glass manufacturers have Prime glass... With Sigma its EX, with Konica-minolta its D with CAnon its L its what you like and can afford....
I have Konica minolta D lens on my 7D and have had Nikon and Canon people say I have top glass.
When you look for your camera... Look for what you LIKe, not what people push you to get.

I concur with GilP, it really is all about the glass. Both Canon and Nikon have some great lenses. If you're into prime (single focal length) lenses, Canon has stellar telephoto primes, but is weaker in really wide angle. Nikon al has darn good telephotos, and might be a little stronger in WA.
The Canon EOS bidies have the unique property of being thinner, front-to-back, than most brands. The upshot of this is that you can use (manual focus) lenses from other brands on Canon cameras. The EOS cams also let you shoot in aperture-preferred mode with a lens that does not report aperture. This opens up incredible possibilities for using some old, classic lenses. I personally use both a Zeiss 75/1.5 Biotar, and an Asahi Optical Super Takumar 50/1.4.

Go to teh store, and pick up both cameras.... feel them in your hands and take along a CF card. Take pics with both in store.. and see what you like... and dislike... make your decision THAT way...

Get the D70 but of course I'm not biased. :-) Put the Canon on your Xmas wish list and hope someone else buys it for you as a backup. ;-)

I got the D70, went with Canon 20D. Not very interested in going back with Nikon.

I don't have experience with the Rebel, but the 20D is awesome. I know a few people (that happen to be from this site as well) who uses the 300 Rebel and it rocks.

sorry...all the hostility :)
guess i'll have to play around and then decide...

Hey RedOak...

Are you saying you had both the D70 and Canon 20D and prefer the latter?
05/16/2005 04:00:54 PM · #18
Hmmm... or Minolta 7D?
05/16/2005 04:05:50 PM · #19

I went through the same thing a couple months ago. Now that I have the Rebel XT I am very happy, but I'm sure I would have been just as happy with the D70. Both have the features you will need.

A couple things that suaded me to Canon:
1) I felt that the support was greater with Canon. In other words I feel that on this and other sites there are a lot of people with Canon cameras that are ready to help. I seem to notice now more people getting the D70 so support is growing there as well.
2) I like the lens system with Canon better. It just seemed easier to figure out how to get good glass across the focal range for not a whole heck of a lot of money.

In hindsight, I'm glad I chose the Rebel, but that Nikon can produce some pretty sharp images as well.

I do like the size of the XT also, but I think when a replacement comes out for the 20D I may upgrade to that.

My .02

Yeah, there are strong rumours of a 5D, would make a useful backup body!

Problem is, the D70 and the 20D are not in the same class. The D70 was designed to be an entry level DSLR and while the 20D is more of an advanced model. They shouldn't be compared any more than the 20D and the D2X.

Bottom line, the camera will be obsolete shortly (if not already), your investment is your choice of glass, and who you trust as a manufacturer.

I had the D70 and went with the Canon Rebel XT. I love both but more comfortable with the Rebel XT.

how odd, I was wondering the same question for the past week or so... canon or nikon? Was looking at the Nikon D100, Canon's DR XT, and the original canon digital rebel. I keep leaning towards the canon side but then I wonder, which Digital Rebel is better? Is the XT worth the few extra hundred?
05/16/2005 05:10:39 PM · #25

Actually if I had to do it over I would take another look at getting the 300D. There is one feature that I have used quite often that the 300D doesn't have that the XT does: Mirror Lock Up.

But, if that is not a big deal to you, spending the extra money on lenses might be a good way to go.
