I just upgraded my connection to 12Mb/sec, and I pay $93.5 each month for it.

I was wondering how much speed you get for your $,

how fast is your connection and what is your monthly payment for it (everything included) ?
and please state your location (city, state, country) so I can add the numbers to get an estimated cost in each area. I'm trying to compare internetcost in different areas/countries.

Your internet connection sounds expensive to me. I pay $39/month for a cable connection through Cox Cable in Arizona.

More important than your theoretical connection speed is your effective or actual connection speed. They are NOT the same. To find your actual connection speed you need to have it measured.

One tool to measure your actual speed is called the bandwith speed test found at:
//www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

I just measured mine and it is 3.8 megabytes/sec. The speed varies from test to test depending on actual conditions so you will want to run the test periodically to know what you really get in the real world. Take the test yourself to find yours.

BroadbandReports has most the tools you need... Forums where you can discuss nearly anything broadband and a Look-up database for ISPs, Prices and Speeds for any given area.

I live in Minsk, Belarus. I have DSL, it is supposed to be 256kb/sec, although in reality it is much slower than that. There is no unlimited access here, you pay for every MB. Download is 3 cents/mb, upload is 20 cents/MB.

I live in Australia and have a 1Mb cable connection which my speed tests show runs at an effective 300kb/s on average
(just tried //www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ =475kb/s.)
It costs aprox US $21 minimum for this service.
I pay about twice this for a plan that gives about 5 times the download limit of the base plan.

My cable internet is expensive because I don't have cable tv with them. I choose satelite and for that adelphia punishes me.

Philly, PA--Cable internet through Comcast.

Cost is $44.95/mo for 4Mbps, and the actual throughput according to the bandwidth speed tests is pretty darn close to it--sometimes even a bit over 4.

You have to make sure you are doing nothing else online while the test is running.

Just ran the speed test on my work PC!!!

Communications 5.5 megabits per second
Storage 733 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 1.4 seconds
Subjective rating Awesome

Not bad

i'll run at home this evening (may take some time...)

Keep in mind that most connections are asymmetric - they download much faster than they upload. This means that the upload speed, not the download speed, is usually your limiter. After about 5 Mb/s, you're capable of downloading as fast or faster than most of the internet can actually send you data, and the only reason to go up above that is if you're sharing a link with other people, or have a particular high-speed location in mind where you pull a lot of data.

For the upload speed, however, nothing is ever fast enough if you're running a site expecting to sometimes put out something popular.

3.5Mb here for $79/mo. But that is guaranteed speeds with a static address.

Are you guys sharing bandwith like standard cable modem users do or is that dedicated speeds? Also does the price include a static address?

5Mb/s here for about $35/month but I'm in Belgium.
In reality connection is always slower.
Providers like to quote max speed.

I have ADSL through SBC, and it is nominally 3 megabits per second down, 512 kilobits per second up. My actuals normally run in the range of 2.5Mb/s down, 450kb/s up. Figuring in TCP/IP overhead, I'm relatively close to advertised speed. Cost is $36 USD per month. Location is Southeast Wisconsin, USA. When I started about 3 years ago with them, I had 768k down, 128 up, for about the same cost. I've upgraded twice since, each time doubling speed, for about the same cost.
There is no guarantee on speed, though SBC has been good about troubleshooting speed issues, which I've had on only two occasions. No static address, which is OK, I'm not serving content, certainly not at 450kb/s, LOL.
Actually, Time Warner's Roadrunner service is faster and slightly cheaper in my region, however I am a few miles outside their service area, and my cable provider (Charter) is not as good as an ISP.

Work:
18.6 megabits per second
Communications 18.6 megabits per second
Storage 2.2 megabytes per second
1MB file download 0.5 seconds
Subjective rating Unbelievable

However, I have Comcast cable at home, and it is quick enough. Good alternative for US customers could be Verizon FIOS

Check it out if it's available in your area:

Here in Romania: cable connection 256 kbps for $29/month, unlimited traffic. Static IP address also. (The test showed 239.4 kbps)

A good site to check your speed is //www.numion.com/YourSpeed/
It gives your speed at connecting to sites all over the world and you can compare your speed to the average of world wide speeds.
Speeds vary with conditions. Whetehr you drive a Ferrari or a Fiat you can still get caught in the traffic :-o

I have the same but it's $26.95/mo.

EDIT: Actually probably closer to your $36 with the taxes and connectivity charges. I'd have to dig out the phone bill and check.
