When I see rebate,I avoid that store .
Dell owes me 100$ since end of 2003 and Circuit City since 1996.

Shop at rebate free stores ,that is the answer.

After working in a camera store for a year, I discovered that rebates are basically a manufacturer's con game. They offer way more rebates than they can actually pay out, notoriously make it difficult by requesting you to send in everything but your birth certificate, and pray that you will just give up and forget about it in the end. I never buy anything with a mail-in rebate..only instant rebates.

Yep, rebates a con game. Have never gotten one yet. Last one was circuit city/sony. Seems the delivery person, the actual salesman, took the boxes so therefore no upc. Lost $200.. Store manager said they would make it good......been nine months.

Actually on the Canon site it tells you to pre-qualify your rebate before sending your proofs. Did anyone do this before sending?

Yup, prequalified for a rebate on a lens and they denied it b/c they claimed it was not a US model, which it was. Called them twice and then they sent it in after the second call. I think they automatically deny a certain portion of them or something.
Hopefully my second attempt at rebate from Canon will be less troublesome.

I have had perfect luck with rebates...Rebel $100, a couple of sandisk emmory cards rebates and about to send in one for an MP3 player. It says allow up to 8 weeks...easy to forget about it. Some of the rebates look almost like junk mail...almost thru the last one out!

As for the canon rebate, i have heard of canon being nice about it if you contact them directly.

Must be a Canon problem! ;-) I bought my Nikon and lens in Feb and just got my $300.00 in Rebates on Saturday. They even have a website you can enter your serial numbers and track the rebate status.

Should have gone Nikon! (Just Kidding! Good luck)

Bought my camera and two lenses to qualify for triple rebates on each item late last year, prequalified at Canon's website, got $445 rebate well before the 12 weeks they promised. Sent my rebate form, box tops, etc, certified mail. Initially I was nervous because nothing showed up on the rebate tracking website for several weeks after I sent it all in, but then everything went very fast.

I sent in two rebates in January for Nikon flash and camera. Got one back have not got the other. Lexar rebate came in about 4 weeks. As for the "system" I friend at UPS told me it is Policy to ddeny every initial claim for damage and wait for the second claim. There is a % who will forget it. I bet rebates work the same way. Best advice: I Keep copies of everything. Use the digital camera to take a picture then print it place it in another envelope with rebate address. If you make one why not make two? Throw it away after your rebates comes back.

The rebate processor for Canon has been notoriously bad. For every "no problem" story there seems to be several horror stories. They seem to reject a large percentage regardless of the completeness of the documentation.
The most fruitful path seems to be to retain copies of EVREYTHING, and prequalify, and let the rebate center know in no uncertain terms that you have copies and will pursue it with Canon if they deny the rebate. It's outrageous that people have to go to this extent, and does not relfect well on Canon. I'm sure that the rebate processor is paid per request, and not on how many they actually process/pay out. They most likely have a great incentive to deny.

I don't think I have EVER received a rebate check as promised. So now I generally won't ever buy a product at all if it mentions a mail in rebate because I know I probably won't ever receive it. Even if the rebate is a small amount or not a big deal in my decision to buy, I won't buy the product at all if it mentions a rebate. It's a SCAM as far as I'm concerned.

Whoever sets up these rebates realize that most people will forget about it after a month and not complain when they don't receive anything, and those that do complain simply get the run-around like mentioned here.

I've not been able to prequalify for the rebates at the canon site - keep "The page cannot be displayed....HTTP 500 - Internal server error Internet Explorer." I suspect it may be my browser settings, though don't know which. I run plain IE6 and have no probs anywhere else. Anyone have any clues?

Thanks.

When I use Firefox v1.5 instead of IE I get "We are unable to process your request at this time. Please try again later."

I have never had any problems with rebates, and I have sent in a lot of them in the past. The 2003 CASH IN WITH CANON I received my rebate just fine. My Rebate from November's huge purchase ($585 rebate!) is almost done. It is in the "CHECK APPROVED" stage. I am confident I will receive the check. I did pre-qualify online as well.

The whole rebate issue across the board has gotten congress's attention. I watched a interview with and it was crazy! These rebate houses offer their services to places like canon, etc. by telling them that they average like 10% rebates paid. There is going to be some sort of reform on rebate houses thru congress here in the near future that should correct this....at least lets hope so.

As a camera store manager, this past holiday season, at any given time, there were 145 rebates out. 145. Manufacturers, third party, store rebates, store gift cards, conditional rebates....it was amazingly hellish. Free Printer Promos, $20 gift Cards, $30 off if you buy a camera with a printer....good fun.

And I gurantee you, 60% of my customers bothered to follow up and get the rebate information.

And about 30% of that 60 probably did it properly.

How many of that will get the rebate? who knows.

Personally, I never deal with rebates. $10 off by mail-in rebate? what the hell, ya know? $10 more out of your pocket and you don't have to worry about the stupid thing. Now if its a LOT of money back, then I can see why people do it. $75 off or more, great offer.

Some people have the rebate thing down and get a lot of cool stuff for close to free...

I have over 300 comming in rebates from my Christmas purchases. $50 on my Sirius radio, and $270 from HP / Circuit City for a computer. They did factor in to my decision to buy, so I hope it works out well.
