Ok, I see many posts about how "sharp this lens is". Here's your chance to prove it.

Forum (posting) challenge:

Take one of your sharpest pictures with your lens of choice. Post a 100% crop of a shot, with NO PROCESSING other than levels, from a RAW format file. That means no noise reduction (so you might want to use ISO 100 or your best ISO). Make sure your RAW converter application can actually turn off sharpening (Raw Shooter Essentials appears to sharpen even when the slider is set to -50).

Post a 640x480 or thereabouts crop (not reduced) of the sharpest picture you can get from your lens of choice. You can pick the best shot, in the best lighting, and other circumstances. It can be the center of the frame. The point is to separate sharpeness of the lens from all processing.

Make sure you include lens information in your post!

Hope lots of people choose to play. It will be fun to see how sharp an unprocessed image is from each lens.

I like this challenge, particularly the "crop 1:1" ration...

You were very quick! But note: your shot should be 100% crop--not reduced at all, just crop out a portion, straight from the camera, except converted from RAW. A JPEG capture is not acceptable for the challenge because it has in-camera sharpening applied. Is that the case here?

OK,
Eos350D Iso 400
70-200 F4.0 L USM
100% Crop
Very bad light conditions (test shot, NOT my lens but will be :)
Fill flash
200MM Handheld 1/160
No other PP then converted from raw (w/o sharpening) & Levels

Edit: Changed 1/125 -> 1/160 (I lied)

And a side by side comparising:

Tiles with the Tokina ATX 242 (24-200)
Iso 100

Same tiles 1 second later with Canon 70-200 L USM

And the last one:

Canon 50MM f1.8
Canon eos 350D
1/30 f2.8

And this is all w/o sharpening

Seems like a pretty unscientific way to compare lenses unless everyone was using the same body.

Looking at the EXIF info you posted, my question is whether or not this was a RAW capture and then converted, or JPG capture?

It wasn't meant to be scientific. I allowed people to post their BEST capture from their lens, but without processing. The idea is to see the best sharpness the lens can do without any processing. Since we are not ranking the results, it doesn't matter if the body/sensor changes.

the 200 1.8 canon or the 200 2.0 leica or a zeiss will win... Not exactly a fair challenge.

edit: guess i'll have to start using raw...

Gosh, anyone here own the 200 1.8?
05/09/2005 01:29:26 PM · #18
Please post only files from RAW, unprocessed as requested. It's misleading to mix in JPG captures.

Not only does JPG involve sharpening and noise reduction, but the amount of sharpening varies based on your camera settings.

If you want to use a lens test chart, that would be great. You can download one here:

Lens Test Chart - See the section 'Do your own test'

I'll post some of my tests tonight.

No lens will win if no one post pics.

I don't normally shoot RAW either, but maybe I will if I get a chance.

I just shot some leaves from out my window... but the raw converter isn't doing anything but producing black jpgs.

Download a 30 day trial of Bibble or Breezebrowser. Both very easy to use.

Not going for any awards here just show Tamron SP glass (17-35mm 2.8-4)

Resized otherwise untouched:

100% Crop Untouched:

Obviously just fixing the lighting in this shot would make it snap.

ED: Sorry put the specs on the picture but not here: IS0 200, f/9, 1/60sec, Handheld...Av Mode, Partial Metering @ 17mm.
