We're coming into the beginning of winter here in NZ and I'm out every wkend taking rugby shots. So far I've been lucky and there have only been a few showers I could dodge.........but I live in the winterless north that specialises in weekend deluges and drizzle!

I rang the camera shops today and there aren't any rain jackets available for the drebel and lens. Can, for a rather large fortune, order underwater housing, but budget won't run to that. Haven't tried, but imagine you could use a plastic bag and rubber bands round the lens. Any other options. How do the rest of you manage?

Don't mind me getting wet but not keen on the camera getting rained on.

Ideas and options greatly appreciated

Finding a good raincoat in NZ is next to impossible, i did have one i got from photo.co.nz but it was bulky and a pain to use. So i ended up buying one from ebay awhile ago. Plastic bags work well, or you could just make a custom cover for your camera and lens.

Thanks Jason. The plastic bag......can you elaborate. Everything but the lens covered with the plastic, just the lens out. Rubber band round the end?

Weather report's not the greatest for tomorrow and somehow doubt my ability to hold an umbrella, keep the camera steady and take photos as I run up and down the sidelines! The vision of how it would look kinda tickles my fancy......wish I could sketch/draw!!!!!!

I've successfully used the binbag & rubber band solution with a little preparation ...
I cut a lens-sized X in the bag, place it over the lens-hood, then tape around the hole to stop it getting bigger. On the day, rubber bands hold it in place on the lens hood and the bag covers all of the lens and camera.

I do have ideas of creating a more professional cover set from the waterproof car seat cover I use for my dog and some velcro, but that would need some manual/sewing skills!

Thanks Bod. I've got a whole pile of binliners at work, will have an experiment tomorrow.

During football season last fall, I found a golf club cover at WalMart for something like $4. It has an elastic opening at one end, and the other end has a flap that opens with velcro. It worked out pretty well!

Cool!!!! we don't have Walmart here, but imagine our Warehouse is something fairly similar. Thanks so much Alan, will check that out tomorrow.

I don't know what kind of lens you might be using, but you'll find that life is much easier if you have an internally-focusing one when you're trying to cover it!

I cover my lens with the plastic golf thing, and use a rubber band to secure it around the end of the lens. This was much more difficult with my old lens, which physically rotates as it focuses. It was a LOT easier with the internally focusing one!

I think the bag I bought is actually a golf BAG cover, not a golf CLUB cover like I said in my last post, by the way. I'm not a golfer, so all of these fancy golf terms don't come easily to me! :)

The Kata camera cover and lens sleeve cost nearly $95 together but if it's something you're going to need every weekend, it might be worth it.
