Hey everyone, I just put up my website at //204.210.157.102 and i've beent told that the thumbnails and the actual images are loading slowly. Does anyone have a solution to making them load faster. Other than lowering the quality of the image, which i've done.

Thank you,

Ryan.

One quick look shows that your thumbs are fairly large files (24-40k). You could reduce them quite a bit without losing any quality. Other than that, I'd be looking at the server.

5k is sufficient for thumbnails. Use just a portion of an image if you feel that too much quality is being lost.

Hi Logarithm,

One thing that you can do to help out the browser's layout handler, is to specify the size of your images using the 'width' and 'height' attributes.

For example:

This may not speed up the actual loading, but it will allow users to see the basic layout of your page faster.

How are you reducing the quality of your jpeg files? One of the thumbnails on your site that I am looking at is 50-odd kB. Although I use smaller thumbs (about half the size), they are still quite a bit smaller at around 4 to 8 kB

To reduce them, when you "save as" in photoshop, i use the slider bar to adjust the image quality and size. For the server, its running slackware 10.1 and is sitting right next to me. What's another good way to reduce the size without making them too pixellated. My friend maxj.net has the same image sizes, but they load much faster and i feel lost. :(

Thank you,
Ryan.

hey ryan,
just realized another difference, although slight, you load each element of your site with each page, for example, my logo and other design images are all in my root folder and each page pulls them up, so after someone visits my front page, they are already cached, so yor thumbnails may only seem to load slower simply because they have to load after the all other elements of your site.

hopes this hepls

Ryan,
Your friend's thumbs are much smaller than yours, both in dimension & file size. Many of his are well under 10k.

In PS, I resize images first. Then I use Save For Web, & adjust the slider there. For thumbnails, you should be able to use a setting around 60 and still get clean looking images.

Afterwards, when closing out your open image, just say no when PS asks if you want to save it. Otherwise, you will have just saved it at the thumbnail size.

Hope that helps.
