depends on the photo... and if you leave tell tale signs.. if there is a tiger with a plant or type of grass next to him that is only found in areas where there are no tigers, well then your given away.. fortunately the definition of "fauna" leaves room for non-indigenous animals.. I would hate to have to vote using my flora and fauna field guides... it would take forever to research each photo!

Good Question? anxious for a answer maybe we need to lighten up a little on these challenges. Everybody can't be right

I am getting reports that the copperheads and cottonmouths are coming out in numbers, too. We have lots of roadkill armadillos, and an occasional raccoon here, too. The vultures are pretty thick up here in the Ozark foothills, too.

Does Fauna refer to several animals of a species or will a picture of a single animal be allright?
04/14/2003 10:05:55 PM · #56
Wild animals....

Would photos that resembled "Girls Gone Wild" count as a fauna?

1. They're animals
2. They are, uh, WILD and uninhibited
3. They go to University of Texas, so they're within a "region".....

:^)

(You'd be surprised how much you can get away with walking into a bar with an expensive looking telephoto lens... I think i'll print out some model release forms.....)

Off to do some taxes....

Despite everyone's attempt at explaining that they know more than the next guy about fauna, the best animal picture is still going to win...lol

I can imagine that most voters will do research on each photo to identify plant life next to the animals to see whether or not they are an indigenous match... just like they spend more than 10 seconds looking at each photo in the challenge....

;)

I think college girls taking off their clothes in a college bar is pretty much indigenous :-)

Hot beer guzzling chicks in bikinis will score well with me...

Flora and Fauna...... yikes! Dogs, cats and lots of flowers!!!!!! :-P

I´ve said it in another thread and I say it here too.
Dogs and cats aren´t fauna - fauna is the "wild" animals around us.
And flora is the "wild" plant world around us.

Yes, I have to agree. I believe there should be some element of "wildness" to the topics. Or perhaps more appropriately, those plants and animals "native" to a specific region. For example, Aussies could do kangaroos and koala's for fauna. I live in Arkansas so I'll go with possums and skunks.

i live really close to St. Louis, so the most we get is deer. i haven't seen a squirrel in about 3 years, so this will be challenging to me. Of course, I cannot enter without a camera to take a picture, but this will be fun. I agree to have pictures of something wild would be more appropriate (and difficult) in either challenge.

Yes, I am still waiting on my camera. My post office lost it. Been fighting them all day to get it to me.

Hopefully I will have some time to go and get a shot or two later this week. otherwise I will be looking at next week's challenge.

Just to throw in my two cents - any pictures of domesticated dogs or cats will get a lower score from me. If people can't show some creativity they don't deserve high scores. "Flora and Fauna" usually means the animal and plant life to a specific area or time. So, if you take your pet dog or cat anywhere in the world they qualify as fauna of that region? I think that is stretching it. Save the pet photos for the "Pets" photo competition.

Is photo of my "EX" considered Fauna?
04/15/2003 12:42:34 AM · #65
I don't think that animals in a zoo should qualify, as to how people would know, make sure you dont' get the bars in your picture.

My friend has a mountain lion, and I live in Montana. I would have loved to get a picture of him standing next to it holding a huge steak. Unfortunately they're gone to a sports show for the week. Bad timing on this challenge.. lol.

I still think those of us living in DC should be allowed to take pictures of Congresscritters. We can show all the various sub-species...

Congreesum Internumius
Lobbyumian Superior, Inferior
Supremeus Courtus Justicus

and so on...:)

Hey, you can't tell me that Congress critters are human. ;)

I have also looked up Fauna in the dictionary.

1. It can be a 'catalog' of the animals of a specific region or period.
2. [Fauna a goddess, sister of Faunus] Faunus was an ancient deity of pastures and forests, later identified with the Greek Pan.

From this I have deducted that I am still extremely confused. :)

Dictionary definitions seem to be a popular theme, though with the confusion I can clearly see why. Since I'm in the UK I'm gonna go by the Cambridge Dictionary definition (since the oxford one needs registration) of...

(from Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
fauna group noun [U] SPECIALIZED
all the animals that live wild in a particular area

Hmmmm, I leave near the beach, that *may* yield something

Good luck.

Okay if the animal is dead? We caught a mouse in a trap and it still looks pretty photogenic! It doesn't look all that wild anymore though.

Hoogie: You've got 70 million sheep over there! Go for it!

Kiwi, I would definitely advise against using your mouse! Judging from the rest of the thread your mouse will be considered domesticated, and your entry will be seriously penalised ;)

And it's amazing what you can do with dead animals (in photographs I mean) - there was a pretty amazing picture of a roadkilled Barn Owl in this month's Amateur Photographer magazine by Frans Lanting. Unfortunately, I can't find the shot online anywhere, but it's worth a look at his web site for inspiration. There are some amazing shots there.

'Face to Face in the Snow' by magnetic9999 ;)

Any other good ones I missed?
