Me again. Mr. Trying-to-get-organized :)

Just looking for suggestions. What does everyone use for the filenames for their pictures? Currently I have a program that renames them with the date and time from the EXIF info. EX: 2003-03-24-1203-03.jpg (yyyy-mm-dd-hhmm-ss.jpg) Which makes sense to me but unless I explain it, most people just see a bunch of numbers, and it doesn't describe the picture very well.

I got my digital camera in January and have probably taken about 1000 pictures with it so far. I don't currently have a system for renaming my images, though I may have to find one in the future. I just leave the filenames as they are and just make folders for each outing. For example, in My Documents, I have a folder called My Digital Pictures which contains subfolders such as Self Portraits, X Ski Trip, Y Ski Trip, In the Apartment, etc.

I leave the originals named as they come from the camera but placed in folders (directories) according to subject matter. Whenever I make a smaller copy to send to friends, I give it a more suitable name but may keep part of the numbered name so I can find the exact original again easily. e.g. 2003/dogs/105-0230.jpg is saved as 2003/dogs/colliepup230.jpg
Just one of many possible methods. Works for me.

My files download from the card into dated folders and the filenames are set up like this 041303 001. I sometimes also will add some special name to the folder itself so I know what was special about that dates photo without looking through the photos themselves for a certain event.

I keep all mine in ACDSee and sometimes batch rename them or sometimes just use the describe feature(for individual pictures). So on the left I will batch rename (the entire series I took that day) for the date, and on the right will be the description of the specific pic. Does that make any sense? I love ACDSee.

My camera software creates a dated folder for each new day that I download pics from the camera (if I'm lazy and wait a day, I can create the correct dated folder myself).

I then have the option of downloading all or one at a time. If all the pics are of the same subject, I key in a descriptive for that subject and let the computer number them (reverse chronological for some reason...takes the last pic off camera first).

If the subjects are different, I download one at a time and key in a descriptive for each photo and use the numbers generated by the program.

Once I've adjusted and resized, I keep the original tag (i.e. Flower 1219) and add the title of the photo to the front and the size of the file to the back: Daffodil Flower 1219 8x10.jpg

I also put the resized and touched up photos in a subfolder in the dated folder.

It's not perfect. I still have to keep a list of dates and subjects so that when I look at the CD with the dated folders, I know where to look for finished files, but it makes sense to me.
