I need some suggestions about this lens. Good/Bad. Its a huge investment and don't want it to collect dust in my bag.

Hi-ho,

I don't have one personally (sorta obvious...) but a friend has one, and it's not quite as sharp at F/2.8 as the Canon version that I have, but it is a very good lens.

Colour and Contrast are similar, and there dosn't seem to be any issues with flare or CA.

He's using it on a D70..

His only complaint has been the weight as he has athritis and lugging heavy gear can get a bit hard on the wrists/hands after an hour or so.

Cheers, Me.

If you're referring to the VR model, it's one of the best zoom lenses nikon makes, from everything I've heard. I have yet to use it but the dpreview nikon lens forum is filled with consumer feedback on this lens and I've heard nary a bad word on it.

The only downside is the size, of course, but if you want high end 2.8 zoom glass, you're getting the girth no matter what. If you can afford it, by all means it will probably be the best mid-long telephoto zoom you can get. My long-term plan is to get this lens with a 1.7TC for the longer requirements.

I am just starting to get my foot in the door of photography and have noticed for a while that consumer brand lenses are great for alot of things but, I like to have that little extra umph!!

Well, if you want something better than consumer but the cost of the VR is putting you off, Sigma makes an exquisite 70-200EX 2.8 lens. It's identical to the Nikon model except for the lack of VR capabilities. It has internal focus and internal zoom. I've shot with it briefly and loved it and the reviews/feedback from owners have all be terrific as well. It comes in at nearly half the price of the VR lens and then you can easily afford a Sigma 1.7TC and some filters to go with it if you were able to make the cash for the VR.

Something to consider.

Wow Thanks
I will consider this. Some day I will get all that I need/want.

The 70-200 VR is one of the best zoom nikkors available, worth every penny.

I rented one for a weekend, I wish I could afford to buy one! It was great, although, for my purposes, the auto-focus was a little slow (my purposes were shooting Indy race cars). The advantages of the VR capability were apparent in my panning shots - //www.bgreenphotos.net/images/_DSC1833w.jpg

Did you limit the AF to 2.5m-infinity or was it on "full"?

Are we talking about this lens "Nikon 70-200MMhere? It has the AF-S system, which is Nikon's fastest Autofocusing system. If this was slow, I'm not sure what you would be considering fast. Do they make something faster?
