I bought a 10x20 muslin from Backdrop Outlet and it has arrived. They folded it into a 1x1.5 rectangle and put it in the bag for shipping. Why does this matter?

The square wrinkles are nearly impossible to get out!! I've put it through the washer twice now, first time I hung it length-wise tightly twisted and hanging from the ends. Still had vertical wrinkles. Today I tried to iron it, gave up after two stripes, it's twenty feet long! Put it in the washer again (easiest was to get it thouroughly damp) and hung it same way, but this time width wise.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to get the square wrinkles out of it? I'm hoping after it's dried or at least hung like this for a while, the straight wrinkles will be out and only the uniformly random ones will remain.

Any suggestions on wrinkling methods and patterns? Something that looks pleasing but isn't too difficult to apply (remember 10x20, it covers half of my studio!), preferably. Thanks!

Have you tried hanging it and spraying on a clothing wrinkle remover, this might help?

When I was single and my clothes were wrinkled I would put them between the mattress and boxspring overnight. Worked great. Seems too big but maybe half one night and half the other night. Not real sure if it will work.

Your best bet will probably be a canister-type clothing steamer. That's what we used in the theatre department to get wrinkles out of muslins before stretching them over frames for painting backdrops, because you can steam it while hanging instead of fighting with an iron and ironing board. You can buy a cheap one for about $99, and you can use it for your clothes, your drapes, all kinds of things. You could probably even rent a heavy-duty one if you don't want to buy one. :o)

edited to make it a bit more clear

soak it in plain water overnight, so the fibres are truly saturated, then hang it up dripping wet. Hopefully the sheer weight of it will pull out the wrinkles. THEN do the steam thing.
Good luck.

At work, we use white muslin all the time.

What beetle, and laurieblack said I think may work.

when you do finally get those wrinkles our, don't worry about folding the thing up, just shove it inside a bag, crumpled. This is how the "grip" department does it when storing.

One tip I read here is to place the backdrop well back from the subject, this could help in disguising the wrinkles.

I'd go with lauriel and beetle's suggestions but one thing intruiged me about your post. What exactly are "uniformly random" wrinkles? :)

Unfortunetly, this will not work. the wrinkles will show. Unless of course you want the wrinkles.

DO NOT SOAK IT IN WATER. Just wad it up in a ball when you are not using it. It would be best to hang it from the stand for a day ot 2. That's it no water no steamer or wrinkle remover. Only time will tell.

Whenever I want to take out wrinkles, I put them through the dryer but I'm not sure about the kind of stuff your backdrop is made out of, I pretty much know nothing about backdrop backgrounds much less the fabric, but dunno if you'd want to try or take it to the dry cleaners

Use shallow DOF lens and move dubject away from the backdrop.

ALSO,wet the cloth and attach weights.

Yes it will shrink, Dry Clean Only. Let gravity remove the wrinkles. If you dry it in a dryer the heat will shrink in and if you dry it over and over it will get stiff. I have had many backdrops both muslin and canvas. Treat them well and they will last 20 years or more.

If you wet the muslin and attach weights it will stretch unevenly and not hang properly.

Hehehe, how ironic that swinging_johnson_v1 asks that question? Hehehe, sorry. Just thought it was funny...

I recently purchused 3 backdrops from a local photographers club auction. 1 muslin 2 canvas, $20, $25 and I think maybe $40. But I have been to busy to use them. I need more room.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I don't have room to hang it unless it's outside, remember it's huge. Hopefully I can get all the wrinkles out before tonight, I'm studio-ing at the prom. Fun stuff, selling prints, I'm stoked (just need a little more coffee!)
