I'm guessing I'll probably hover right around 5 again.

my 1st vote was a 7 then it avg. out at 6 after the 2nd vote then it droped to what i thought in would be viewed as now it has be stedily climbing up i have no idea where it will all top out at but i think before 100votes it is frivioulis to get your hopes up......after 100 the scores hit what they seem to stay at.....

did that even make any sence i'm to tired to really think but i can always hit the update button.....that requires about 1/32 of brain to do......i better just step away from the keyboard and click away....

My first vote was a 3. Second vote was also a 3. Third vote was another 3.

I took a break and relaxed in the jacuzzi for a bit. Just came back and now I'm at:

So I had a nice big sigh of relief. I thought I was going to get the brown ribbon. I'm so used to scores being high at first, and if those 3s were high votes, I was thinking I was going to end up in the 2.0 range.

I'll admit that I'm disappointed so far, but no complaints really. I guess my photo subject wasn't "mini" enough :0) My entry is a photo that I really like, and I hoped it would get off to a better start:

okay...help...being the clueless person I am,
minimalism" in my mind (another problem in and of itself)is well...minimal...if I open the picture and many things get my attention is that "minimalism"? Are many small images supposed to be many "minimal"? (can hear the laughs on that grammar)...but dang..help me out here...I don't want to score incorrect. However, there are many nice pictures that don't seem minimal to me...so i'm thinking I need help with my direction of thinking...see?how is "minimal" seeming so overwhelming?

From the challenge description:

Create an image where your subject is the strong point of the image, but only occupying a very small portion of the image space.

So, for the purposes of meeting the challenge, the subject need only be (a) the focal point (which it usually is anyway) and (b) small.

Speaking for myself, I think I'm going to get hammered for not meeting the challenge, because I have a perhaps misleading title and the subject of my photo is not isolated in a classically "minimalist" way >_<

Turned on the "Show My Scores" option just to see this. Not as bad as I feared!

I submitted by the challenge topic, not by what my definition of minimal photography or art is.
04/27/2005 02:34:42 AM · #20
Personally, I think isolation and simplicity are sort of important in this challenge. I can't help needing to combine my own view of minimalism and the challenge definition; I did that as well as I could in my own entry and am seeing a lot of similar photographs in the challenge, which leads me to think others have too. That is not to say I am going to harshly subject everyone to my POV; I have seen a lot of good photos that are too busy for my view of minimalism, but are still great and deserve high marks. But some are going to be lowered a tad from me because they simply don't meet one definition or the other enough in my opinion.

Scoring is subjective; that's just the way it is. This challenge in itself is extremely subjective.

That said, my score's alright for the first night (though it'll be down a point by tomorrow), and I'm pleased to have three comments and a favourite. They don't really fit very well with the rather mediocre first night score, but I'd rather a few people really like it than everyone sort of like it.

oh lawdddddddddd...this is helping my confusion? I see photos where images are large..take up 95% of frame...so yes gotta be the 'focus' of the shot..but 'small'? I'm goin for therapy..lol
04/27/2005 02:43:49 AM · #22
I gave a minimum score of 5 to every shot that I felt met the challenge.

Upon viewing each shot, if I felt the strong point was something large in the background/foreground I scored it below 5.

I'm not sure if I can say this but I voted a higher ratio than usual as 5 as they met the challenge but in my opinion, did little else.

Hope this helps.
