unless you are inspired to do so by the image. Don't do it just so you can make a quota to get in an invitational challenge.

I second that.

I have to totally agree with you on this one. I had 28 comments on my tacks submissions with alot of them just saying "ouch".

That's because it's the emotion it evokes when they look at your tack entry. Very valid comment...it evokes pain...

Might have been a better idea to go ahead with the invitational without advance notice. Rewarding members for past contributions is one thing. Encouraging more comments is another. Both commendable but combining the two in the way this challenge does clutters the landscape with comments of dubious value and motivation while it cheapens the past efforts of many long time contributtors. Another "not very well thought out" extra challenge. Can't we do better than this?

Just my two cents.

I think "kick-starting" a higher level of commenting activity is worth it. I think people will try to make meaningful comments -- if you read the original announcement you'll see that we will be watching out for people "spamming" the comment field simply to qualify.

Let's back off the Elitist attitude here, this site is international and a large number of people here don't have English as their first language. So if all they can comment is a "wow" or a "Nice shot", so be it. It is a worthwhile and appreciated comment. People who don't want "wow" or "nice shot" comments are only shooting themselves in the foot, showing their elitist attitude like the rest of the plebe is not worthy enough to comment on their special shot...GROW UP!

Just out of curiosity, last night when I first read about this challenge, I reviewed the records of all 14 SC members.

5 were qualified to enter this invitational.

4 were not anywhere near close enough to qualify.

2 were close enough that they can qualify fairly easily.

3 will be able to qualify with a lot of effort.

There are lots of different ways for people to be contributors to the site. Commenting on photos is only one of those ways.

I would rather they leave a comment in whatever language they normally use instead of wow or nice shot. I can go to babelfish and translate...

Good luck getting a readable translation!

Even if someone who's native tongue is English leaves a comment like "wow", "nice shot" or "Good job" they should NOT be blasted for leaving such a comment! Their comment is as valid as anyone elses.

That's interesting! I'm not that far from being moved from the first category to the third ...

I'm not sure I need to run Romanian comments through the Babelfish translator ...

"Not very well thought out" and "I personally don't like the idea" are not the same thing.

didn't you had romanian anchestors, if I remember well? It's in your gene then look there reather then babelfish where you won't find it :)

if they wanna comment "wow" or "nice shot" let them. for all we know they are gonna change the invitational to must have over 500 helpful comments etc. If you make a comment helpful then just make sure it is or was helpful and not just wow or nice shot.

I think my paternal great-grandparents came from Romania, but my grandfather was born in New York, so my gene pool is rather diluted ...

hehe :) now seriously I can also guess what they are trying to say in many languagess, but I can never guess a word from the icelandic guys. That language is like from another planet to me. Please, I don't want any of those comments. And I don't think they are on babelfish eyther. :)

Yeah, don't comment on my photos neither, I'm trying to fill the quota! :P

I like most comments that i get. And if one says just WOW then that will make me happy all day. A lot of my comments are in that style because if i like a picture i don't want to suggest that they could have taken it better. So if anyone gets a comment from me that says 'nice shot', then it means that i have taken the time to look at the shot and consider all the options. If i like it then i must think that the photographer likes it and has decided whatever PP they have done puts forward the message that they are trying to say. So if anyone wants to take the time to look at my pictures then they are welcome to leave whatever comment they like. Even if this means that my comments received overtakes those given.
