I've been looking at a bunch of Jewelry catalouges on and offline too see what they do and have found a few different things.

First, there are many pictures of silver and diamonds with blown highlights, that seem to pass quite well.

Second, there a few that are subtley done with softboxes but don't show off that glare which is the cool thing about jewelry....the bling...the shine.

So which is it????? Bling or Understated?

Also, some catalouges let the jewelry share the frame with the prop. which might have occupied most of the composition. I suppose they do this to guide the buyer and add a certain aura to the piece. Is that ok?

I wish I had a macro lens badly at this point, on a side note.

Interesting questions. I had this discussion with my girlfriend and found we have very different taste in advertisement. Aside from Clothings, we came to two very distinctive conclusions concerning the photography itself.

I like when the product is displayed untouched, on a platter or in a specific enviroment. She likes when a model interact with the item.

In the case of jewelry, i like displays and she likes to see nice men or woman wearing the things. Two different worlds.

I think its the same kind of questioning you are going through, and though i'd share it.

As for the Macro lens, i too am wishing on this LOL.

Cheers,

Jen - just back up from it in steps until it is in focus and crop it. You only need to get it to 640pixels wide (for this site anyway).

Jen, I looked up the specs for (are you really using) a HP Photosmart 320. The cam is a fixed focus camera that the camera will focus on everything from 75cm (about 2 and a half feet) to infinity. Meaning, you can get no closer to the subject than 2.5 feet, you will have to move back until you can find the sweet spot that it close enough but object is still in focus.

Also appears be a fixed apreture of f/4.5 meaning all lighting and adjustments have to be done outside the camera.

yep awpolard,,that is what I am using,,so it does make some shots really difficult,,I am saving to get something different,,something that will give me the flexibility that I need.

Can we add text to the picture?
04/22/2005 12:39:33 PM · #9
Extra Rules: Non-styled text (that is, simple monochrome letters without added effects) may be added to your entry to simulate a headline and/or ad copy but is not required. Any added text should serve to augment your photography and not vice-versa.

In my quest to reach a 5.5 score at DPC, I tried hard to make something worthy for the jewelry advertisement challenge.

After 100+ of shots, I realized that it is really hard to make such a simple image! I admire even more all the folks here that make those 'simple' stock photos... I had fun learning things on the way though. Can't wait to see the comments.

I'm not sure if I should add a text to my photo.... are we looking for a fake jewelry store name .. or something that defines the image. or a phrase that lures costumers?

Does anyone have thoughts on my original post?????

I'm not adding text because I don't want to but I'd bet a million dollars that added text will get voted down because many voters will not have read the extra rules. Risky proposition.

I'd like to think that when people see that half of the entries have text, they may get the gyst that it's legal this time :) At least I'm going to have a *little* faith...

I assume that "simple monochrome letters without added effects" includes NO dropshadow? Or is that not a text effect? I'd sooooo love to use it :-(

I thought that if you are going to allow people to use text as they might in a jewelry photo why not allow people to use the exact same effects as they might use in an actual print, as well?

I agree - it's an Advertisement - why would you limit the text effects?

Just submitted my entry, including monochrome text. My only hope is if DPC folks have a sense of humor. I love the photo and believe it meets the challenge but we'll see what the general population thinks beginning Monday morning.

Good Luck Charles! Be sure and post a rant about the voting & comments if people don't "get it". ;-)

No worries though - most here have a great sense of humor from what I've seen.

Maybe I'm wrong? Maybe I'm totaly wrong.....?

I can see the comments now...
"where's the text, doesn't really meet the challenge. 4"

LOL! You're not wrong. That is why I am titling my picture like this:

Entry Title - Photographing jewelry is a challenging task. Managing the reflections, color and sharpness of a small, multi-faceted object takes skill. See how well you can photograph jewelry in such a way as to be suitable for use in a print advertisement. Good luck! Extra Rules: Non-styled text (that is, simple monochrome letters without added effects) may be added to your entry to simulate a headline and/or ad copy but is not required. Any added text should serve to augment your photography and not vice-versa.

Hope they allow enough characters for that!
