I was looking at buying a D70 online and some of the sites said that the product "may not be American model." What other models are there, and what's the difference?

the non-american model is grey market and is sold without warranty

Nikon (and other manufacturers) "protect" their American distrbutors (and their higher prices) by designating units "officially" imported into the UDSA as "American Models" and only offer warranty service to American consumers to cameras whose serial numbers show up in their database as "legally" imported. I found this out the hardway when I bought my 5700 (from an American store) online and later tried to download updated, related software from the Nikon web site. They refuse to allow me to access these upgrades because I have a graymarket camera. I'm long since past the warranty stage anyway (never needed it) but it hurts not to be able to access the many, free features downloadable from the Nikon USA website.

Robt,

Can you not simply download your update from another global site? I bought my D70 here in Switzerland and it has all the official Swiss documentation and warranty but I've registered with Nikon UK and use that for all my support. The reasons for this, firstly my English is better than my German and secondly I will be returning to England sometime in the near future. I have had no issues at all registering a Swiss market camera under UK support.

I think Nikon USA is sort of separate from everything else. It's either Nikon USA or Nikon Global, as it were. I mean with regards to serialization, etc. If I'm not mistaken, it's either a USA serial number or an international one. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

not only warranty - they also seem to package their "kits" differently - I almost ordered D70 from one of such cheap places. They offered a D70 body for $500 or so which sounded too good to be true - and it was. Not only it was sold without any warranty, it turned out that they sell the body without a battery and a charger, and they wanted additional $160-170 for these "optional accessories". Upon hearing that, I just went straight to focuscamera.com and bought the USA version. Very happy I did that.

No. I can't download from Global with a USA IP :-) Reason iw anted to is to update my RAW capabilities. I got arounf it with Irfanview, it's not an issue anymore.

Rebelo, I thought there was USA, Asian, and everywhere else, 3 entities. I could be wrong. And thatw as back in the late 70's, when i was a pro shooter, a lot could have changed since then.
