This semester, which I am spending abroad in Sydney is winding down, and I just learned that I won first place in the abroad photo contest! The $100 prize is nice, but it doesn't even matter - I am just so humbled and honored by the fact that I won something like this.

Ironically, the picture that actually won was not snapped by me. I set the settings and went to entice the subject, but the picture was actually taken by my friend Randi. You can see it here: Winner

Here are some of the other shots which I submitted, a couple of which may be used in future brochures for Boston University's Sydney Abroad program (we were allowed to submit 7 images):

Would love to know what people think about each one, which is their favorite, etc...but either way, I'm absolutely delighted!

That is one huge duck in the winner, congrats. I shot a few ducks this weekend, just because there are a lot of people at DPC who are into ducks.

Pic 1 is my favourite, though.

Hehe, thank you, although I am not sure that it is a duck. That would be one gigantic-mutant duck if it were the case. I thought it was a pelican, but maybe not.

Oh, it's a Pelican for sure. And a danged big one, at that. They must grow 'em big down there?

Boston University, eh? Come on over to the Cape for a visit sometime.

I thought you said "study abroad", not study "a broad". ;-) Congratulations, nice shots! That pelican is huge!

hahaha! but it's *supposed* to be an immeresed cultural experience :-p
and yeh, that pelican was a big boy...a bit later he also indicated to me that he didn't want to have his picture taken anymore: uh-oh

and bear, I go to the Cape every summer...we stay in Dennis :)

bear, that'd be great! we just bought a little summer cottage in dennisport last year, so we're virtually next door neighbors.

It's a pelican we have alot of them here in the Danube delta, and some of them get even bigger than that.

wow, it's hard to imagine birds much bigger than that which are actually capable of getting off the ground.

Thanks for looking at my pics! When I whas a kid I went with my family fishing in the delta for 2 weeks, and I saw them. Not only they are huge and they do fly large distancess, maybe I'm mistaking but I think in winter they migrate as far as to other continents, and they live in huge comunity's hundreeds of them and often when one takes off they all do together. Once an entire gang took off right from somewhere close to us over our heads, I can't describe the noise they made. They are 3 times as huge when they spread wings. It's something I think I'll never forget. I whas terrified. :)

You're not mistaken. They DO migrate, some populations for huge distances. Pelicans are among the most "prehistoric" of birds, too; there's nothing flying that can come close to it except a condor, for suggesting how it must have been when the world was young and the skies had not been tamed. They always make me think of Pterodactyls. Wonderful birds...

Yea they are awsome, especially in theyr natural habitate, can't compare to seing them in zoo. Once if I will have a proper equipment I plan a bird watching in the delta. About 1000 other rare species there. One day...

yeh, they are definitely beautiful and majestic animals. Here is another picture from that day that I particularly like: pelican

edit: oh, and it wasn't at a zoo, it was at a sanctuary for injured or orphaned animals

Nice photos. They are magnificent birds. We have them living locally around here. Snapped this one the other day. They gather around the fisherman when they come back from the morning catch ! I love the texture in this shot. Feel like I want to touch him/her !

It's been a great 4 months. The people here are amazing, the weather is fantastic, the city is gorgeous, huge, and clean, and the life-style is a perfect balance of work and play.

Holy s@#t that is one massive critter!... Though I have to say I'm now dubious of your height - I'm six three too and australian, and I've never seen one that goes past my waist like that:P! I think more likely it's a bit of a deceptive angle.

If not, it's one for the good folks over at guiness world records I'd say.

Hope you had/are having a blast down here... did you ever get up to sunny queensland - i.e you can't come to australia and not do the great barrier reef/ queensland coast etc.
