HI everyone, I am new...and I took this photo I'd like to enter,,but I"m sure there are a few basic changes I could make that more experienced photographers know of that would improve the quality of my photo.

If any of you have the time, I'd love to email it to you for your critique,,and be open to suggestions. For example I"m not sure if my photo looks better in color or grayscale (is that black and white? ) Just email me at karinmct@telus.net and I'll send you the photo!

Thanks everyone in advance for replying:) Karin!

This is silly. After all, this is a Challenge and anonymous at that. It's even sillier when I consider that the harshest, and totally unrealistic, comment I got on the candid was from you (and I wasn't the only one).

Welcome to the world of dpchallenge submissions.

Whoa. Gotta call you on this one, Journey.
I think people are merely trying to understand this one. People usually don't feel the need to ask for submission advice, but I would say it is the norm for this challenge. There are a great many of us now, and asking for one or two people to help may be okay now and then.
Afterall, we are all consenting adults, so-to-speak.

Karin, I really didn't see anything wrong with the comment you made on
journeys photo. I did'nt see the others. This is the exact reason I don't make comments. Some people think every comment has to be to their liking.

Sonifo, nowhere did I say that every comment has to be to my liking. But Karin made an unrealistic comment for the candid submission, a challenge where composition for some of us had to give something. The point I was trying to make is that it is a lot easier to critique and comment on pictures when you have never submitted yourself.

These challenges are just that, challenges, and you will learn from the process of making decisions, should I shoot this or that, should I submit picture a, b, or c, should I crop it this way or that way, should it be in color or in B&W. And you do learn from the voting experience and the comments. You will learn a lot less if you rely beforehand on people making the decisions for you.

If you want to get some feedback from a friend before submitting, that is fine. But to start crying for help on the forum I find defeats the purpose of the challenge. If all of us, start circulating our possible pictures beforehand to a lot of people than that defeats the idea of a challenge. In that case I would opt for the photosig route.

Actually, it is kind of hard to learn from a one of challenge subject, how will you be able to test what you learned?

And guess what dude, there are a lot of people asking for advice and feed for pictures before they submit.

Frankie says "Relax"

Maybe we could try this issue from a different angle?

First -- to Karin: Your request is not at all unreasonable. As a matter of fact, go to my profile page, send me an email, and I'll let you know how to gain some advice. I have learned that a 2nd or 3rd opinion is even more valuable in the learning process than jsut going at it blind.

Secondly -- to Journey: I read Karin's response ot your picture. I did not see it as harsh or anything other than open, frank, and honest, as were the other comments i've seen that she made. Quite honestly, I see this as the pot calling the kettle black, 'cause i've read some of your comments that are just plain condescending to folks. Please, before you jump to conclusions, and respond by shooting from your hip, slow down and think about how what you are saying sounds to others.

Finally -- to anyone else reading this: This is not the first time a newcomer has been blasted for asking something like this. To the best of my knowledge it is not a rule that your picture remain anonymous, it is more of an unwritten understanding. Before you jump on someone for making a simple request, please try to frame you answer with tact. If you can't, please send them a PM and don't emabarass them publically in the forums.

There, now i am goign to find someone to critique my pictures! :-)

That's fine; I'll stop making comments altogether then from now on; saves me a few hours a week.

i know that there have been threads in the past in which participants try to point out an aspect of their entry that some low voters have apparently not gleaned - and the community has swiftly swooped down to chastise that person for discussing an entry for a challenge-in-progress

but as long as only a few people are involved, and this is a testing-the-water arrangement - no hanky-panky - then what's the harm?

HI Everyone,,particularly Journey,,,,I just wanted to say a few things here,,starting with Woah Nelly,,,I was not meaning to step on toes here,,with either my question asking for feedback (I've never been a member of an on-line community or photo contest community before,,so don't know the p's and q's yet!) or for my comments on photos (The feedback option is there for a valid reason and I am just trying to give mine,,as I believe feedback from all levels of photographers can be useful if it's not malicious,,,some feedback may be ignorant at times,,,especially from beginners!>,,,as we all know that we are not in the photo takers head and unless you are you don't know the nuances/deeper meaning behind the photos and their attributes). So Journey-I didn't mean to be harsh and the comment was realistic to me or else I wouldn't have wasted the words. I hope to comment on your photos in the future, again being honest and concise...I guess as I'm not very technical yet,,,I comment on what I find visually appealing and yours didn't strike that with me this time. No offense meant at all! Good luck in future challenges everyone.

I think the "rule" is that you don't do anything which would disclose/identify your entry to the whole DPC community. That is, don't put a link to, or the title of, your upcoming or current entry in the forums. There are MANY members (including myself) who are either family members or online acquaintances, who regularly or occasionally share/exhange ideas and images via email or other sites. This is generally considered OK.

Just, please, exchange information/images for upcoming challenges outside of the forums (via Private Messaging from the Profile Page, email, or some other website), until after the voting has concluded.

I think the forums are best-suited to exchanging comment/criticism/condolences regarding the current RESULTS, or ideas for future challenges or site improvements.

Journey,

You're obviously a smart person and a cable photographer, so...

It surprises me to see that you can dispense, but cannot take constructive criticism.

It disappoints me to see the level of maturity you're demonstrating with
your last remark.
