Can someone suggest the next step camera to get? I have a olympus D-390.
I am new to this, but really enjoy it, and want to be able to take better pictures.

What kind of photography do you want to do? What's your budget? How big of a step?

I want to get creative and do all kinds of pictures. Right now I can only do $200.00 or $300.00.

If you can identify three specific scenarios in which your camera's features failed you, you can probably expand that into requirements for your upgrade (or do so with a little help).

Barring awareness of specific scenarios, your upgrade won't do anything to improve your pictures. In fact, I've heard many people say that their pictures went downhill after upgrading from a digicam to a dSLR.

If you want to upgrade because you want some new gear, there's nothing wrong with that as long as you don't put too much emphasis on a specific piece of equipment's ability to directly improve your photography. In many cases you already have what you need to take better pictures.

Take a look at the Canon S1. Lots of zoom, good pics with low noise and "acceptable" noise to ISO 200.

That's the top of your budget though (just under $300 discounted). It's only 3 MP, but that's enough for most people, especially considering this has a 10x image stabilzed zoom, so you can zoom right in rather than crop.

Or the Panasonic Lumix Z3 (again, top of budget or maybe a bit over). Also 3MP.

In that price range, I'm not sure how many options you'd have to upgrade that would buy you a substantially improved feature set. Without going to a dSLR your gear-based options are mostly in teleconverters and close-up rings. I don't know if your camera has these as options, but the Canon Powershots and Nikon Collpix models both would have these upgrade paths. You'd pretty much shoot your budget on the camera alone though, and still not be any closer to gear that would expand your options.

I'd suggest that your best path to improvement on a tight budget would be a photography course, or a sincere photo-a-day project. You're probably going to need closer to $500 for a significant upgrade in digicams, and $1000+ for dSLRs.

a great jump would be the canon powershot G6, compact, great image quality and not so expencive, it offers full auto and full manual control, end everything in between, it has a hotshoo for external flash and there are some lenses available, like wide angle and closeups.

if you want to go further then the Canon powershot pro 1 is the next step, more expensive, bigger and even better image quality then the G series, and it has top of the line lens.

if that´s not enough then you could go for the 350 XT wich is an DSLR, that means that you have to buy lenses and accessories, this can get quite expencive.

I don´t think you want to make a bigger jump than that, it only means thousands of $$.

The Canon S1 is $309 at Newegg.com. A lot of camera for the price with a 10X zoom and image stabilizer built in.

I've been pretty happy with my Z2 and you can still find them...now at a discounted price. The Z3 may even fit your budget and it has image stabilization.

Quality of the lens seems fine and it's been very flexible and dependable in the 5 months or so I've had it.

10X optical zoom, 4x digital zoom. 4mp.
